GAS TURBINESGas turbines for Turkey:GE Frame 9E turbines in actionGE will supply long-term services and an equipment upgrade to increase output & availability ata cogeneration power plant owned by electricity generating company Camis Elektrik Uretim ofMersin, Turkey. The plant’s increased power output can now support regional growth.GE has just signed contracts worthnearly US$20 million to providemaintenance and outage servicesfor a new GE Frame 9E Gas Turbine for 10years and to upgrade an existing GEFrame 9E Gas Turbine at the plant, whichwill boost the output of the unit by 2.3%.The new equipment and the upgrade willimprove the performance and availabilityof the units, which will help reduce thecost of maintenance, fuel consumptionand the risk of power shortage scenariosin the region, especially in peak periods.Specifically, the upgrade of the olderunit will include a combustion hardwareextendor system that will increasemaintenance intervals from 12,000 to24,000 hours, advanced abradablecoating, brush seals and control curvemodification. The GE solution will enable Camis to bemore competitive in its market throughgreater efficiency, improved capacity andreduced operational costs.Using gas turbine exhaust gases toproduce process steam, instead of wastingthat energy, will help drive lower costs forCamis’ production facilities and improveits growth potential in the market. The new service agreement builds onCamis’ relationship with GE, whichincluded the initial supply of the gasturbines, and a previous serviceagreement for one of the plant’s units.“This agreement demonstrates thecapabilities of GE’s Power GenerationServices business to deliver cleaner, smarter and more efficient solutions to itscustomers and help them to be moreinnovative and competitive in meetingtheir market conditions,” saidRicardo Cordoba, regionalpresident and CEO of GE Energy.Camis’ two GE Frame 9E GasTurbines entered commercialoperation in 2006 and 2009,respectively, each producing 125megawatts of power. The upgradeproject will result in the mostadvanced configurations availablefor this class of gas turbine. The service agreement withCamis further expands GE’sgrowing presence in Turkey. After establishing a regional salesoffice in Istanbul in the early1990s, GE has been very active inthe Turkish power generation market. Todate, GE has supplied equipment forpower plants that are operating or underconstruction in Turkey totalling more than10,000MW. Those installations includeheavy duty and aeroderivative gasturbines, steam turbines, Jenbacher gasengines and wind turbines.GE currently serves the energy sectorwith technologies in such areas as naturalgas, oil, coal and nuclear energy; wind, solar, biogas and water processing; energymanagement; and grid modernisation.GE also offers integrated solutions toserve energy- and water-intensiveindustries such as mining, metals, marine, petrochemical and other fuels.WIPInternet linkwww.ge.com16M ARCH 2012 • WORLDWIDE I NDEPENDENT P OWER
