DIESEL ENGINESDiesels & the HERCULESresearch programmeWorld-leading low- and medium-speed engine manufacturers, Wärtsilä and MAN Diesel &Turbo, have announced that the next phase of the long-term HERCULES research programmedesigned to achieve sustainable and safe energy production has now begun, reports WIP.This next development phase hasbeen made possible thanks tofunding from the EuropeanCommission, reports Wärtsilä and MANDiesel & Turbo. Phase III of the HERCULESprogramme - HERCULES-C, aims atintegrating several successfultechnologies in order to reduce emissionsand optimise the efficiency and long-termreliability of power-generating marineengines.HERCULES-C is planned to run for threeyears, from 2012 to 2014, with a budgetof €17 million. This brings the total HERCULES researchprogramme budget, which includes theearlier HERCULES-A and HERCULES-Bprojects, to €76 million.Comments Prof. Dr. Gunnar Stiesch, VicePresident, Advanced Engineering Four-Stroke MAN Diesel & Turbo SE: “The firstobjective of the present HERCULES-Cproject is to achieve further substantialreductions in fuel consumption, while atthe same time optimising powerproduction and usage.”He said: “This will be achieved throughadvanced engine developments incombustion and fuel injection, as well asthrough improvements in ship energymanagement, and the use of new enginetechnologies supporting transport missionmanagement.”The second objective is to maintain theGen-set elements.performance of enginesthroughout theiroperational lifetime. This involves advancedmaterials and tribologydevelopments to improveefficiency and reliability,as well as sensors, andfull monitoring andmeasurementtechnologies to improvethe controllability andavailability of marinepower plants. The third specific objective ofHERCULES-C is to achieve near-zeroemissions by integrating the varioustechnologies developed in the previouscollaborative research efforts. The object is to achieve increasedefficiency and reliability, with reducedfuel consumption and emissions.Wärtsilä and MAN Diesel & Turbotogether cover about 90% of the world’smarine engine market. These two majorpartner groups have been collaborating inthe HERCULES programme since it wasconceived in 2002 to develop newtechnologies to increase marine engineefficiency. In so doing, fuel consumption, CO2 emissions,as well as gaseous and particulateemissions can be reduced, while enginereliability will be increased. For more information youcan visit the HERCULESwebsites:• HERCULES-A (Phase I)2004-2007 atwww.ip-hercules.com• HERCULES-B (Phase II)2008-2011 atwww.hercules-b.com• HERCULES-C (Phase III)2012-2014 at www.hercules-c.comWärtsilä is a global leader in completelifecycle power solutions for the marineand energy markets. In 2011, Wärtsilä’s net sales totalled€4.2 billion with approximately 18,000employees.
