Vacation studentsvisit our operationsCampbellclan returnundergroundAfter living in Ireland for the past 41 years,Martin Campbell returned to his oldstomping ground at Mount Isa Mines withhis brother Joe in March.In 1968, the pair took five days to navigate theroad-trip from Sydney to Mount Isa in search of the“big money” they heard could be made working inthe mines.Joe stayed for 31 years with Mount Isa Minesworking as a Plate Layer, while Martin stayed for threeyears working as a Detonator Crimper (draft miner).Since departing in 1971, Martin hadn’t been backto the mine, let alone Australia, after he returned tohis homeland in Northern Ireland 41 years ago.That was until March 2012 when he made his firsttrip back to Australia in nearly four decades – and hewas eager to take a trip down memory lane and goback underground with his brother Joe.Joe, 71, retired to Brisbane in 1999 after morethan three decades working for Mount Isa Mines, buthe also returned to help with the construction of HardTimes Mine at Outback at Isa many years ago.Joe’s son Tyrone, an Xstrata Mount Isa Minesemployee, took the pair, along with their otherbrother Stevie and his wife Sheila for a tour of theunderground operations at R62.Vacation Work Program students from Xstrata Mount IsaMines and Ernest Henry Mining took the opportunity totour our operations in February.Ernest Henry Mining’s 15 vacation students visitedXstrata Mount Isa Mines, experiencing what it would be like to workat one of the largest underground mining operations in the world.The 86 vacation students based at Xstrata Mount Isa Mines alsogot the opportunity to get a closer look of the operations at ErnestHenry Mine during their 12 week vacation work program.Pictured above from top:Xstrata Mount Isa Mines vacation students get a firsthand look at the ErnestHenry Mine operationsXstrata Mount Isa Mines vacation students take a tour of Ernest Henry MineErnest Henry Mining’s vacation students visited Xstrata Mount Isa Mines on10 February where they experienced what it would be like to work at one ofthe largest underground mining operations in the world.Joe, Martin, Sheila and Stevie Campbell before headingunderground at R62mine to market13
