See www.ledsmagazine.com/news/6/2/5. ◀_______VISION & MEASUREMENTASSIST guidelines shed lighton nighttime illuminationThe Alliance for Solid-State IlluminationSystems and Technologies (ASSIST) haspublished a new volume in its “ASSIST recommends”series, “Outdoor Lighting: VisualEfficacy.” Developed by the Lighting ResearchCenter (LRC) the document describes a unifiedsystem of photometry that characterizesthe often tricky photometric performance oflight sources under nighttime conditions.The human visual system uses two typesof photoreceptors, cones and rods, found inthe retina. Cones are used to process visualinformation under daytime or “photopic”light levels, while rods work under completelydark “scotopic” conditions. Thereis, however, a range of light levels called“mesopic,” where both cones and rodstogether provide input to the visual system.Mesopic light levels are typically found outdoorsat night, where streetlights, cars, andbuildings all contribute to the total lightlevel. Since commercial photometry is basedentirely upon the photopic, or daytime, luminousefficiency function, it may miss-estimatethe effectiveness of some light sourcesused at night, says LRC Director Mark Rea,one of the authors.news+viewsThe proposed unified system of photometryintegrates both the scotopic and photopicluminous efficiency functions into a completesystem that can be used across the entire rangeof light levels available to the human visualsystem. The system differentially weightsthe two efficiency functions depending uponlight level. “In effect, it is a system for choosingamong commercially available light sources todeliver the same unified, rather than photopic,photometric quantity,” says Rea.The ASSIST publication provides step-bystepinstructions for calculating the unifiedluminance of a given light source based onlight level and the scotopic-to-photopic ratioof the light source. Different combinations oflight sources and light levels may produce thesame unified luminance, which indicates photometricequivalency.
