Harley (HASL)From time to time there have been inquiries and requests forinformation which might give an indication of the errors of measurementin various phases of the strontium program. It has been common in thepast to indicate only the error of counting since this was originallythe major error in the final determination. It is desirable, however, toset up a means of determining the overall error* This is to be considereda progress report on the subject*The errors contributing may be introduced in the sampling, inthe chemical preparation and analysis, by contamination, or in thecounting, standardization or computation of results.It is quite probable that the error of sampling is larger thanany of the errors of the determination. Limited work has been done bythe analysis of replicate samples to establish the overall error. Acomplete independent estimate of sampling error, however, would requirean extensive planned experiment for each type of sampling and these havenot been carried out. For the present, therefore, this discussion will belimited to the errors of measurement.The chemical treatment of samples and their preparation forcounting is of course subject to accidental errors but the most likelysystematic error is in the determination of chemical recovery. In recentyears this has largely been minimized by the use of strontium-85 for theradiometric measurement of recovery. This has eliminated errors due toimpure precipitates and the presence of normal strontium in the originalsample.The problem of contaminated samples has arisen several times butcan be eliminated in the practical sense. The worst form of contaminationis cross-contamination between samples or standards with strontium-90,This can only be detected by results which appear to be out of line withexperience or by the measurement of a sufficient number of blank samplesto give a high probability that such contamination would be detected.Contamination with other nuclides by incomplete chemical separation isusually detected by decay or energy measurements in the final yttrium-90precipitate. In most cases the result can then be corrected for thepresence of foreign nuclides by the same decay or energy measurements.The counting errors are normally reported in terms of thePoisson standard deviation, There has been considerable variation inreporting, however, in that one, two, or even three standard deviationsare shown as the error term,, The purpose in requiring this term wasoriginally that the counting error was large compared to the samplevalues and because it gave an indication of the quality of the countingequipment and the duration of counting. This has been very useful andstill has many advantages in the reporting of data.One of the more critical errors has been variation in thequality of the material use for standardizing counters« The basic- 132 -
