REPLACING EVIL WITH GOODfor. In short, Christian reconstruction necessarily involves covenants:family, church, and civil. 5 Success cannot come on the basis of pureindividualism.Study GroupsYou have read this book. You are convinced that something needs tobe done. You may not be certain just what needs to be done, but youunderstand that the church needs to get involved. But what if yourpastor is unaware of the material in this book? Give him a copy andask him to evaluate it. See what he thinks. He may never have heardof any of this before. On the other hand, he may know more about it than he lets on. Hemay know enough not to want to get involved. Almost no pastor everwants to deal with these issues from the pulpit. It is risky. He mayalienate some church members. If he were to preach about theproblem, it would also require him to come up with concrete, biblicalanswers to the problems raised <strong>by</strong> this book. Very few pastors believethat the Bible really and truly speaks specifically to modern social, political, and economic questions. (Example: ask your pastor what thebiblical criticism of the Federal Reserve System is. There is one. 6Does he know what the answer is? Does he even know what theFederal Reserve System is? This is not the sort of question that mostpastors seek answers to in the Bible.)Furthermore, most pastors hold a pessimistic view of the future. Theybelieve that Christian people will not be able to reverse the world'sslide into chaos. They do not believe that God has a program ofcomprehensive redemption which is going to become visible acrossthe earth before Jesus returns physically and ends history at the finaljudgment. Such an era of victory is what the Bible teaches. 7 Not manypastors believe this, however. Since they think Christians cannot win, they hesitate to get involved in a long-term battle against political evil. Why get involved in a losing cause? They prefer to stay on thesidelines. It is safer to preach other kinds of sermons. What can you do about this? Not much. You can set up a quiet studygroup for church members. I have outlined how students can do thison campus. You can imitate it. I include this very practical section inmy highly controversial little paperback book, 75 Bible Questionshttp://freebooks.commentary.net/freebooks/docs/html/gnco/html/8.htm (12 of 15) [5/26/2000 1:48:23 PM]
