THE REALITY OF CONSPIRACIESconclude this. The "kooks" claim otherwise. Who is a "kook"?Anyone who claims otherwise. Why is this the standard interpretation? For a conspiracy to havesuccessfully replaced the highest political figure in the land wouldraise too many questions. If the assassin did not act <strong>by</strong> himself, peoplemight start asking additional questions, such as:Who financedhim? What did hisfinanciers expectto gain?Who replaced thePresident inoffice?Who has gainedwhat from the newman? Is the public at themercy ofmurderers?Should they, too,be investigated? In the case of John Wilkes Booth, historians do admit that this was aconspiracy. We know that several boarders at Mary Surratt's boardinghouse were involved. After all, one of them tried to kill Secretary ofState Seward the same night. So there was a conspiracy — aconspiracy of nonentities. Then, in 1937, an amateur historian (whatelse?) named Otto Eisenschiml had his book published, Why WasLincoln Murdered?, a book which presents evidence that points toStanton, Lincoln's Secretary of War, and other anti-Lincoln RadicalRepublicans as very possibly involved. This book is no longer inprint, despite the fact that books on Lincoln seem to sell forever. Thisis not the sort of conspiracy which is discussed in college classroomsin U.S. history — or any other history. This may have been aconspiracy of "Insiders."A Quiet Revolutionhttp://freebooks.commentary.net/freebooks/docs/html/gnco/html/1.htm (5 of 12) [5/26/2000 1:48:02 PM]
