Brisbane State HighNewsletterPage 10 of 15Faculty NewsMathematics Department NewsThe Year 8 Interclass Maths competition was held in F Block on Thursday May 5, organised by MrsHeilbronn and compered by Mr Orfanos. Team representatives for 15 Maths classes competed. It wasone of our most exciting competitions, as it came down to a tie for first place between Maths Class Jand Aspire Maths Class A. There was also a tie for second place between Maths Class E and Aspire MathsClass C. The winning team, Maths Class J, was eventually named after five tie breakers.The team representatives receiving trophies are J.Huang and J.Fong.Team members will be consulted about training for a team for the Regional QAMT-ED Q MathsCompetition, which we have won 15 times since 1984, and if successful they’re on to the SE Grand Finalwhich we have won four times in recent years.Humanities Department NewsMs Lynette HeilBROnn, TeaCHerCongratulations to T.Hayward, R.Jones, G.Anderson, I.Thurecht and N.Brown who were selected torepresent Brisbane State High School at the Waterways Alive Student Leadership Training on Friday,June 3 as part of World Environment Day celebrations.These students will engage in a range of catchment and environment-based learning activities led bywaterway, natural environment and city design/planning experts.CompetitionsThe United Nations Youth Association Queensland Round of the Evatt Trophy Competition is beingheld again this year. The competition involves students participating in a Mock Security Council as arepresentative of a specific country. It provides a unique opportunity to learn about the world fromfellow students and to develop views and debating skills in an interactive and ‘real life’ context. TheBrisbane heats are being held on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22.Interested Year 10, 11 and 12 students should see Ms Nicholas in the J Bock staff room by Monday, May16 to register.Year 12 – 2010 FoldersStudents who graduated last year can pick up their folder of Senior Humanities (Geography, ModernHistory, Ancient History, Economics, Politics) work if they leave their name and details at A BlockReception - phone 3291 4111. Once your folder has been located you will be contacted and your workcan be picked up from A Block Reception.Science Department NewsMs RebeCCa NiCHOlas, Acting HOD HumanitiesWhite Water PhysicsThis term in Year 8 Science, we are discovering the role of energy in our lives and the best way toharness energy to work for us.On Wednesday, May 4 - 80 very excited Year 8 Aspire Science students headed off to White Water Worldto spend the day experiencing energy in action. On the way to White Water World, the buses were filledwith lots of talking and wondering about what the day was going to be like, after all it is not every daythat you go to a theme park to learn about physics.Unsure of the relationship between water rides and energy transfer, it did not take us long once we hadarrived to work out the relationship. The most popular ride as voted by the students was the GreenRoom.The trip home on the bus was filled with discussion of the formulas and science concepts featured inour excursion booklet, with calculators being passed from seat to seat to check answers.Our trip had been a success, we had experienced Science in action and it was fun.Visual Arts Department NewsA.Hundal, StudentCreate 2011Friday June 17 marks the date of our annual State High ‘CREATE’ art exhibition. It promises to be avisual feast again this year, with exceptional Visual Art and Film and Television works on display fromall year levels. Expect the Art Factory studios to be bursting with paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints,animations and films, and the gardens to come alive with outdoor sculptures, an outdoor cinema, asenior wearable art show and roving performers. It is a night on the State High calendar not to bemissed!!! Hot food and coffee to keep you warm will be on sale throughout the night. Come along andsee what State High Visual Arts have to offer!Storytellers of the Floods Film ProjectEleven lucky senior Film, Television and New Media students had the opportunity to participate in theplanning, filming and editing of a group film for The Storytellers of the Floods project last term. BrisbaneState High, along with Milperra State School, were the only two schools in Brisbane involved in theproject, which was funded by the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in Sydney, and itaimed to tell the students’ stories about the floods in Brisbane earlier this year. A screening of the filmswas held on Thursday night, April 28, in the Performing Arts Centre at State High. Congratulations tothe students for their films, and a big thank you to AFTRS Film tutor, Maria Barbagallo, for all of her timeand effort working with our students.Indigenous Awareness Art CampThe Art Sub-Committee is organising an Indigenous Awareness Art Camp to be held at North StradbrokeIsland on August 5 to 7. The camp is open to both indigenous and non-indigenous students, and aimsto promote an awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture and art in the area, and to workcollaboratively, experimenting with new sites and new audiences through both digital and traditionalmethods of art making. Visual Arts Head of Department Jessica Wall, School Chaplain, Andrew Foley,and Teacher Aide, Nancy Alick, will be attending the camp. Interested students should see Miss Wall inthe Art block for further information.Art Sub CommitteeIf your student studies Visual Art and you are looking for a way to become further involved in the lifeof the school, the Art department has an Art Sub-Committee, a group of parents who meet regularlyto discuss the running of the Art Factory Gallery, and Visual Art extra curricula programs offered tostudents of State High. Meetings are generally held once a month and I would like to invite otherinterested parents to join in 2011.
