Career Builder produces a comprehensive report (4-8 pages) and wehave encouraged all students to show their report to parents/guardians.Future activities for the Career Education Program includes:• Attendance to the Brisbane Careers and Training Expo (May 13)• University/tertiary presentations (May 19)• Australian Defence Force, police and ambulance presentation (May 26)There will also be two Guidance Officer, HOD Senior Schooling and Vocational Education presentationson June 2 and June 9 to explain thoroughly the senior education and training pathways available inYears 11 and 12.Year 12 Tertiary Applications Program (TAP)Every year, many well qualified applicants miss out on a place at university because of poor preferencing.The Tertiary Applications Program has been has been developed by the BSHS Guidance Office in anattempt to ensure that students make well informed choices about the tertiary programs and campusesavailable to them post school and that they get an offer.In August, Year 12 students will meet with one of the Guidance Officers to discuss their QTAC or tertiarypreferences. Already students have listened to one of a number of QTAC presentations upon returningfrom the mid semester break. At the end of this presentation student were directed where to find acopy of the Tertiary Applications Program on the school’s intranet as well as being emailed a copy of theprogram through their school account.Please note that there will be a parent information night about the QTAC application process in thefuture. We aim to make this a valuable source of information to parents and students in light ofsignificant changes to tertiary admissions in 2012. Judging by the ratings, I was definitelyin the minority. For all the social changes that have occurred over the past fifty years, it appears thatpeople still love the idea of a fairy tale wedding. It appears that many people still believe in ‘love’ anddream of ‘forever after’. I do sincerely hope that Will and Kate have a wonderful life together. Thechallenge is that for every monolithic wedding that fills the pages of magazines there are also pagesof scandalous affairs and photos of relationships falling apart. Does ‘forever after’ even exist anymore?Whilst relationships are extremely complex and there can be a huge array of reasons for relationshipbreakdown, within celebrity weddings we can see some patterns.Issue Date: 13 May 2011www.statehigh.com.au/news

If I wouldlike to listen to an obscure recording, I can locate it on the internet with one search. Our society alsovalues image. This can be seen by the rise in popularity of ‘photoshopping’ photographs to look like anairbrushed model. We are told that if we purchase a new season jacket we will be trendy and hip justlike the ‘people’ portrayed in the advertisements. Even in some relationships a partner can seem likethe perfect ‘accessory’.I personally believe there can be a danger if we view our relationships within the same cultural light.Marriage needs to be deeper than the image of an epic, dream wedding to survive. What happens ifyour partner requires major surgery and doesn’t look like a model anymore? How will you cope if thewealth dries up? The Hollywood scene of an attractive, wealthy, married couple riding off into a stylisedsunset is nice but it is not the basis for a healthy marriage.Marriages that survive are much deeper than a consumerist transaction. If we enter a marriage lookingfor what we can ‘get’, chances are that it will not work. Where does this leave your relationship if yourpartner has an accident requiring personal care for the rest of their life? Relationships are ultimatelydestined to fail if they are built upon our own ‘wants’, image or temporary fulfilment.What is the secret to ‘true love’ and ‘forever after’? I don’t believe that I am qualified to answer. My wifeand I have only been married for nine years and we have a long (and exciting) future ahead of us.I have seen some beautiful examples from couples that I believe were ‘qualified’ (having spent theirentire lives together). My Grandma and Grandpa were a couple that have inspired me even after theypassed away. When they were both in their eighties, Grandma still called him her ‘boyfriend’. Heunderstood and accepted her incredible stubbornness and she lovingly stood beside him as Parkinson’sdisease gradually overtook his body. She loved him even when he couldn’t communicate properly withher. Together they had been through wars, business success and failures and they’d lived to see theirgreat-grandchildren. Through all the joys and lows they still chose to love each other unconditionally.For me personally that represents ‘True Love!’I am sure that we have not finished hearing about Will and Kate. There will be marriage specials on theirlife and many beautiful, photo shoots to come.Will their ‘love’ ultimately win?
