TheMotor Spirit Quality Upgradation Unitat Indian Oil’s Barauni Refinery wasdesigned to produce gasoline withBharat Stage III specifications. Thisis the second MSQ project deliveredby Punj Lloyd for Indian Oil, the firstbeing the EPC project at HaldiaRefinery.The MSQ unit at Barauni is basedon Axens technology on a LumpSum Turnkey basis, producing aMS pool based on Axens NHDT,Isomerisation, Prime G+ and NSU/HDT/CRU processes. A total of fiveproduct streams are sent to theMS pool, out of which two are wildand three controlled streams. Wildstreams comprised Light CrackedNaphtha and Heart Cut Naphthacoming from Prime G+ unit, whereascontrolled stream comprisedIsomerate coming from ISOM unit,Reformate coming from RSU andDesulphurised Heart Cut Naphthacoming from Prime-G+.The project also comprisedconstructing a Nitrogen Plant, H2bullet, control room, substation,air compressor, five In Side BatteryLimit (ISBL) tanks, and four Out SideBattery Limit (OSBL) tanks, besidesfour prominent units which were:• NHDT unit• C5-C6 Isomerisation Unit• Reformate Splitter Unit• Prime-G+ UnitEngineeringCutting edge engineering wasdelivered by Punj Lloyd Group’sengineering arm, PL Engineering.The plant layout built in enhancedsafety as per Oil Industry SafetyDirectorate (OISD) guidelines, at thedesign stage itself.
