The value ofprocured material was highcomprising 271 mechanicalequipment, 1,845 electrical,5,424 instruments, 300 kmcables and 120 km pipes. Inthis project, Punj Lloyd wasawarded the complete electrical& instrumentation work on aturnkey basis in order toexpedite delivery.Crisis management, includingplanning for fire& gas hazards,was extensive.The fire and safety systemwas connected to the existingfire and safety control room ofthe refinery. After hazardousarea classification, a completefire fighting equipment layoutdetailing fire extinguishersand gas detectors at strategiclocations near each of theunits was made. Enhancedfeatures of safety were built inat the engineering stage. Frommarkings of fire tender entry,anticipating water demand &water velocity to the fire waterring around the plant and thewater supply from independenttie-in points of existing fire watersystem were all worked upon.Fire hydrants were positioned ata distance of 30 m around highhazard area. Enhanced vigilancewas maintained with monitorsat strategic locations. A strongpublic address system wasavailable along with manual callpoints.Further safety was ensuredin every possible way with OWSsystems being provided withvent pipes and the vent pipesbeing placed higher than nearbystructures, separate earthingof electrical and instrumentequipment, air fin coolers andhydro carbon pumps providedwith sprinklers, hooters insidethe compressors area, amongothers.With the adoption of suchadvanced safety features, theteam clocked over 14,700,000man-hours without any lost timeincident. •27Update > January-August 2012
