The oil circuit based on the dry-sump principle
In the case of the dry-sump lubrication system,
the entire oil supply is retained in an additional,
external reservoir, and not in the oil sump.
To facilitate this, the oil pump is of three-stage
design. Two stages draw the oil out of the oil
sump at various points and pump it into the
reservoir.
Cooler
The third stage (discharge stage) returns the oil
from the reservoir to the engine via the oil cooler
and the oil filter. The oil sump can be kept small
and flat due to its lower oil volume, with the
result that the engine has a smaller overall
height.
This requires a slightly more complex design.
