NC STATE2008 GAME NOTESBEST BEHAVIORThrough head coach Randy Shannon’s first 23games at the helm of the University of Miami footballprogram, the statistics have shown a drastic changein the Hurricanes’ discipline on the field. Despite aseason-high 12 penalties in UM’s road win atVirginia, for the second consecutive season theHurricanes are close to even when it comes topenalty differential. The last time the Hurricanes finishedthe season will fewer penalty yards than theiropponents was 1994, when UM was penalized for775 yards compared to 807 for its opponents. The ‘Canes closed out this season’s homeslate with a record of 4-2 in their new home, with wins over Charleston Southern, UCF and Wake Forestand Virginia Tech and a pair of losses to ACC foes North Carolina and rival Florida State. Before this season,the Hurricanes defeated Virginia, 31-21, in the Carquest Bowl in 1996; NC State, 46-23, in 1998 in theMicron PC Bowl and FSU, 16-14, in the 2003 Orange Bowl.DOLPHIN STADIUM CROWDSThe following is a game-by game list of the attendance figures at Miami’s six games this season in itsnew home, Dolphin Stadium. Spence,who ranks second on the team with 60 tackles, has shown big play ability early in his career. His first careersack came against 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, while his first career touchdown came on aseven-yard interception return of a pass thrown by FSU’s Christian Ponder on Oct. 4. For the season, theMiami native is tied for the team lead with seven-and-a-half tackles for a loss, in addition to adding two passbreak-ups and a forced fumble.LOCKER ROOM LEVERAGEThrough Miami’s first 11 games, the Hurricanes are out-scoring opponents 177-to-99 in the first and thirdquarters combined. UM is out-scoring itsopponents by 39 points in both quarters (83-to-44 in the first and94-55 in the third). Miami also holds an edge in the fourth quarter, scoring 84 points thus far to its opponent’s65.TURNING POINTAfter creating just three turnovers in its first four games, the Hurricanes returned to their usual ways thelast seven contests, forcing 10 turnovers (two interceptions, eight fumbles) since the FSU game on Oct. 4.FSU’s Christian Ponder was picked off twice - once by senior cornerback Bruce Johnson (his first of theseason) and once by freshman linebacker Sean Spence (his first career pick). A pair of FSU fumbles werealso recovered by senior saftey Ryan Hill (his second recovery this year) and redshirt freshman AdewaleOjomo (his first career). The ‘Canes had a couple of crucial fumble recoveries in the win at Virginia, withJohnson (late in the 4th ) and Ojomo (overtime) falling on the a pair of late fumbles.MISSING MCCARTHYWith junior linebacker Colin McCarthy out, Miami’s defense suffered a serious blow. McCarthy, whoplayed a key role the UM’s first four games, left a big void in the linebacking core and maybe just as importantly,on special teams. No UM defender had more tackles than McCarthy over the previous year-and-ahalfwhen he suffered his injury, with the Clearwater native collecting 74 last season and 17 this year inMiami’s first four games. In addition to his play on the defensive side of the football, McCarthy had been akey contributer on special teams, setting several crucial blocks for UM return men on punts and kickoffs.SHARPTON’S STRETCHJunior linebacker Darryl Sharpton has been one of UM’s top tacklers this season, collecting 53 tackleson the year. He was at his best however in the month of October, when he recorded eight tackles againstFSU, seven against UCF, 10 at Duke and seven again verus Wake Forest in a span of 22 days.Sharpton, who averages 4.8 tackles per game on the year, stepped up his game with an 8.0 tackle-pergameavearage in that stretch from Oct. 4 to Oct. 25.PAGE 10MIAMI FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

NC STATEFOURTH DOWN FORTUNEMiami is 25th nationally in fourth-down efficiency on offense this season, converting 10 of 16 attempts.The ‘Canes also rank in a tie for 20th nationally in fourth-down efficiency on defense. The Hurricanes havestopped their opponents 12 out of 19 times on fourth down through11 games.FOR STARTERSOnly four UM players have started all 11 games this season. Three defensive players (Glenn Cook,Bruce Johnson and Steven Wesley) and only one offensive player (Xavier Shannon) have taken everyopening snap on their respective side of the ball heading into the NC State game. Five players (GraigCooper, Jason Fox, Orlando Franklin, Robert Marve and Anthony Reddick) have started 10 of 11 conteststhus far. Against Virginia Tech, Fox snapped a streak of 33 straight starts after suffering an ankleinjury at Virginia on Nov. 1.DON’T BLINK NOWWhen Miami’s offense gets the ball in its hands, you better not get up out of your seat or you might misssomething. Twenty-one of UM’s 32 offensive touchdowns this season have come on drives of three minutesor shorter, with nine of those 32 TDs coming in under a minute. In fact, prior to the Virginia game,UM’s longest touchdown drive in terms of used game clock was only a 4:28-drive resulting in a ShawnbreyMcNeal one-yard rushing touchdown with 4:19 to play in the fourth quarter against Duke.The team’s quick-strike ability was on display against Texas A&M in College Station, when three offensiveTD drives lasted 35 seconds, 27 seconds and eight seconds respectively.Against FSU, UM had two touchdown drives of less than 30 seconds, with Travis Benjamin reachingthe endzone on both. His first touchdown was the lone play of a seven second drive that saw him scoreon a run early in the second half.
