Sam Shields, Kayne Farquharson, LeonardHankerson and Khalil Jones are the only four recievers on the roster who had caught a collegiate passheading into this season, with Shields (847 career recieving yards) as the only one with more than 100career yards coming into 2008 (former WR Ryan Hill - 182 career receiving yards - is now playing safety).Joining Shields, Farquharson, Hankerson and Jones is a talented freshman class, including AldariusJohnson, Travis Benjamin, Laron Byrd, Thearon Collier and Davon Johnson.While only seven UM wide receivers caught a pass in 2007, the Hurricanes have surpassed that markby three this year. Johnson leads the team in catches (30) and yards (321), while Benjamin is averaging ateam-best 17.2 yards per reception.YOUNG’S EARLY INFLUE<strong>NC</strong>ENew defensive coordinator Bill Young has the UM defense playing well through 11 <strong>game</strong>s in 2008.Traditionally known for having one <strong>of</strong> the most athletically talented defenses nationally, <strong>Miami</strong> appears tobe regaining some <strong>of</strong> its success Hurricanes’ fans have become accustomed to the last three decades.Through 11 <strong>game</strong>s this season, the Hurricanes rank 20th nationally in total defense (304.55 ypg), 8th inpassing defense (164.73 ypg) and 57th in rushing defense (139.82 ypg). The Hurricanes also rank 27thnationally in tackles for losses (6.64 pg) and 20th in first downs allowed per <strong>game</strong> (16.18). The ‘Canes, after holding Charleston Southern to just <strong>12</strong>6 total yards <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fense in the opener, shut downthe fifth-ranked Gators’ ground attack in Gainesville, holding 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow andthe UF running <strong>game</strong> to just 89 rushing yards on 27 carries (3.29 ypc). In fact, the <strong>Miami</strong> defense held astrong Gators <strong>of</strong>fense to just 18.85 yards per drive on UF’s first seven drives <strong>of</strong> the contest.Against A&M, the Aggies gained just 87 yards on 35 carries for an average <strong>of</strong> 2.5 yards per carry.Versus U<strong>NC</strong> on Sept. 27, the Hurricanes held the Tar Heels to just 35 yards on 33 carries (1.1 ypc).U<strong>NC</strong> RB Greg Little, who was averaging 60 yards rushing per <strong>game</strong> coming in, was held to just 38 yardswhile back-ups Ryan Houston and Shaun Draughn were held to just 18 and 13 yards respectively.UM’s passing defense had a strong <strong>game</strong> against rival FSU on Oct. 4, collecting two interceptions whileholding the Seminoles to just 159 yards through the air.Versus UCF, the UM defense held the Knights to just 78 yards <strong>of</strong> total <strong>of</strong>fense and sacked the UCF quarterbacksfive times.Against Duke, <strong>Miami</strong>’s defense forced the Blue Devils into seven punts, and held them to just six thirddown conversions on 17 attempts.The ‘Canes held Wake Forest - the ACC’s top-passing <strong>of</strong>fense at the time - to just 57 yards passing thispast weekend.In Charlottesville, UM held one <strong>of</strong> the ACC’s top ground <strong>game</strong>s in check, holding the Cavs to 71 rushingyards on 23 attempts.Two weeks ago against Virginia Tech, <strong>Miami</strong> held Hokie running back Darren Evans to just 43 yards on17 carries. The Hurricanes also tallied a season-high six sacks against Virginia Tech.TRUE FRESHMEN ON TAPAccording to available information, Jacory Harris was the first TRUE freshman to start at quarterback ina season opener for the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Miami</strong> in his collegiate debut versus Charleston Southern. <strong>Miami</strong> has33 newcomers on its squad this season with a 2008 recruiting class ranked No. 1 in the country byESPN.com. Of the 100 total players on the roster, the Hurricanes list 40 freshmen - 31 true freshmen andnine redshirt freshmen.
