The book chronicles the last fewmonths of her daughter’s life <strong>in</strong> Mount Elizabeth whilst fight<strong>in</strong>ga battle aga<strong>in</strong>st a viral attack on her heart. The book is alsotestimony to the doctors’ and nurses’ dedication and to the highquality service provided to Maria.Inspired by the courageous battle her daughter fought until thevery end, Natalia started a charity foundation <strong>in</strong> Indonesia whichgrants term<strong>in</strong>ally ill children around the world their last wishes.The book launch was well attended by guests from Indonesiaand S<strong>in</strong>gapore. Guests of Honour <strong>in</strong>cluded dignitaries from theIndonesian Embassy <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore; supporters of Madam Natalialike Mrs Wardana from Garuda Indonesia and Mr Greg Allan,General Manager of the Marriott S<strong>in</strong>gapore; and the local media.usher<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the year of the oxThis Ch<strong>in</strong>ese New Year, the festive spirit was clearly evidentat <strong>Parkway</strong>’s three hospitals <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore as doctors andmembers of senior management got together for lunch andto perform the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese New Year ritual of lo hei.For the un<strong>in</strong>itiated, lo hei is a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese New Year traditionthat is ma<strong>in</strong>ly observed by the Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>in</strong> Malaysia andS<strong>in</strong>gapore. It <strong>in</strong>volves friends and family gather<strong>in</strong>g arounda table to toss a raw fish salad (“raw fish” translates <strong>in</strong>toMandar<strong>in</strong> as yu sheng, which sounds the same as thewords for “<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g abundance”) to welcome <strong>in</strong> the NewYear and ensure prosperity and good luck for the com<strong>in</strong>gmonths. Custom dictates that the higher you toss the saladwith your chopsticks, the more good luck you will garner.Thus, at each of the hospitals’ lunches, doctors from thathospital and <strong>Parkway</strong> people gathered for the lo hei and, asis the tradition, shouted their wishes for prosperity and luckfor the com<strong>in</strong>g year as they tossed the raw fish salad.ch<strong>in</strong>ese new year surpriseOn 4 February 2009, the three long-serv<strong>in</strong>g staff membersat Gleneagles Hospital — Uncle Sham from the hospitalmail room, Environmental Services attendant Kams<strong>in</strong>, andOperat<strong>in</strong>g Theatre assistant Poh Leong — who have beendiligently work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>Parkway</strong> for five decades, were <strong>in</strong>for a surprise as Group Executive Vice President, Mr DanSnyder, dropped by unannounced to present them withgifts to honour their years of dedication to <strong>Parkway</strong>.The gifts were beautifully framed copies of theopen<strong>in</strong>g double-page spread of the cover story of the<strong>in</strong>augural issue of Connect featur<strong>in</strong>g the three longserv<strong>in</strong>gstaff members.Accompany<strong>in</strong>g Dan <strong>in</strong> wish<strong>in</strong>g the staff well wereGleneagles Hospital CEO, Ms Tan Poh Lan, who, <strong>in</strong> theCh<strong>in</strong>ese New Year spirit, also presented them eachwith a pair of mandar<strong>in</strong> oranges; S<strong>in</strong>gapore Operationsrepresentative Ms Luna Lee; and Ms Soh Say Lim,represent<strong>in</strong>g the Service Excellence department.Speak<strong>in</strong>g to each of the three veterans, Dan was fullof praise, not<strong>in</strong>g that their commitment to Gleneaglesand <strong>Parkway</strong> was admirable, and someth<strong>in</strong>g that allother staff should emulate.
