He says that see<strong>in</strong>g a child pull through seriousillness to lead a normal life is the true reward for what hedoes. “I have operated on babies who’ve recovered and arenow go<strong>in</strong>g to school. I’ve treated an 18-year-old girl witha sp<strong>in</strong>al cord tumour and when she married at 25, I wasable to share <strong>in</strong> the festivities. All this gives mean<strong>in</strong>g tomy work. In life, we need to have purpose and direction <strong>in</strong>what we do, not just to work<strong>in</strong>g to earn a salary”.Enrich<strong>in</strong>g the lives of children with severe lifethreaten<strong>in</strong>gillnesses is foremost <strong>in</strong> his personal pursuits.As Chairman of both the S<strong>in</strong>gapore chapter of Make-A-Wish and Make-A-Wish International, Dr Goh leads a globalcharity organisation which is now <strong>in</strong> 32 countries andwhose mission is to grant the wishes of these children.“These kids go through a lot, liv<strong>in</strong>g with the spectre ofa serious medical condition, and yet are <strong>in</strong>credibly braveand resilient. Make-A-Wish is a wonderful way of br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>ghapp<strong>in</strong>ess and hope <strong>in</strong>to their lives, help<strong>in</strong>g to relieve theawful pa<strong>in</strong> and suffer<strong>in</strong>g that they have to endure.
