In itsdarkened depths, a pipe suddenly burst. Water flowed<strong>in</strong>to the cl<strong>in</strong>ic and towards the corridor outside. It wouldhave cont<strong>in</strong>ued all night if not for a sharp-eyed staff onhis rounds.Mohd Dali B<strong>in</strong> Khalid has been a staff member at MountElizabeth Hospital for 22 years, work<strong>in</strong>g his way up fromLaundry Attendant to become a ‘Specialist’ <strong>in</strong> clean<strong>in</strong>g.Now Senior Attendant for Environmental Services, hechecks every level of the 18 floors the Hospital occupies.That night Dali was work<strong>in</strong>g the second shift, from2 to 9.30pm. He had completed his stock check and justbegun <strong>in</strong>spect<strong>in</strong>g every floor. “My job is to check all thepublic areas to see that everyth<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g order. Forexample, I look out for lights that have blown their fuse.I also check the toilets to make sure that noth<strong>in</strong>g is spoilt,and no toilet bowl is choked. If I f<strong>in</strong>d anyth<strong>in</strong>g wrong,I will issue a work order for the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance departmentto fix it,” he says.As Dali passed by one of the closed cl<strong>in</strong>ics, he noticedwater flow<strong>in</strong>g out from under its door. He quickly calledthe rest of his team to help, and made an urgent call tothe plumber. In no time, the previously deserted scenewas a flurry of activity as “all hands came on deck” todeal with the leak. Even the doctor who runs the cl<strong>in</strong>ichad rushed back with the keys.
