90sense of touch.Key Concepts and Skills• Explore, recognize, and identify shapes by feel. [Geometry Goal 1]• Describe attributes of shapes. [Geometry Goal 1]Terms to Use shape, corner, side, round, curve, circle, triangle, square, rectangleShow each of the large posterboard shapes (which may now be shape collages) from theprevious activity. Pass around an attribute block of each shape for children to feel. Askchildren to describe one of the shapes without giving its name. Review the discussion fromthe previous activity and prompt children to describe one thing about the shape, such asthe number of corners or sides. You can record the properties that children describe on thereverse side of the shape collage. Ask children if they know the name of the shape, andwrite the name on the back of the shape collage. Repeat this for all four shapes.Put several matching pairs of attribute block shapes into a Feely Box. Have a childreach in and pick out two shapes that feel the same. Ask the child to show the shapes tothe group, name them, and replace them for the next child. Ask: How did you know thatthe shapes were the same? Repeat several times, then put the Feely Box and shapes inthe Math Center for free exploration and play. For children who need more practice or a simpler introduction, hold upa shape and ask children to locate the same shape in the Feely Box withoutlooking. Then have them identify and describe the shape. For a slightly moredifficult task, name a shape, and then have a child reach in and try to find thatshape by feel. Prompt children to explain how they identified the correct shape.A U D I T O R Y K I N E S T H E T I C T A C T I L E V I S U A LPut the shape collages and magazines from the previous activity in the Art or MathCenter and invite children to add to them. When the collages are complete, punch a holenear the top and hang them with string so that both sides will be visible.ART CONNECTIONCut small sponges into geometric shapes for children to use for printing.Children dip the sponges into paint and use them to print patterns, pictures, ordesigns. Children can also make pictures by cutting shapes from colored paper(or using pre-cut shapes), then gluing them onto construction paper. You might show acollage-based picture book by Lois Ehlert to inspire children’s artwork.MATH SNACKHave children nibble crackers or cookies to create different shapes. Encourage childrento “show and tell” about the different shapes they make.Whole GroupSmall GroupPartnersCenter1-3, page 51, for informationabout making a Feely Box(or Feely Bag).Recognizing StudentAchievementUse Shapes by Feel to assesschildren’s ability to name shapesand describe some of theirattributes. Children are makingadequate progress if they correctlyidentify and name a triangle anda circle. Some children may beable to recognize the differencebetween squares and rectangles.[Geometry Goal 1]Shape PrintsKindergarten© 2007 Core Components**Core components developed by the author team from the University of Chicago School MathematicsProjectOne Kindergarten Core Classroom Resource Packageincludes:• Teacher’s Guide to ActivitiesTeacher’s Reference Manual (Early Childhood)Math MastersAssessment HandbookHome Connection Handbook (Early Childhood)Minute Math® (Kindergarten)Center Activity CardsClass Number Grid Poster• Thermometer Posters• Content-by-Strand PosterOne set of Student MaterialsKindergarten Features• Over 100 hours of adaptable math activitiesSuitable for half-day or full-day classes•Provides partner, small-group, and whole-class options•Center ideas •Assessment options•Ongoing routines••–My First Math Book– Mathematics at Home®Books 1, 2, 3, & 4Teacher’s Guide to ActivitiesContains daily classroom activities andongoing routines. Sample answer: Line up theright end of AB with the mark for 4 in. on the ruler. The left end6 in. This ruler shows the two parts of a mixednumber: the whole number and the fraction. A mixed numbercan be viewed as the sum of a whole number and a fraction.Discuss why fractions greater than 1 are easier to interpret whenwritten as mixed numbers. For example, 2 3 4 clearly represents anumber greater than 2 but less than 3. This is not as obviousReview the meanings of proper fraction, improper fraction, andsimplest form with the class. A fraction in which the numerator is less than thedenominator is called a proper fraction. A proper fractionnames a number that is less than 1.9, 0 0 4 A fraction in which the numerator is equal to or greater thanthe denominator is called an improper fraction.
