Oral Microbiology and Dental Health Research Theme<br />

THEME MISSION<br />
The mission <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Otago</strong> Oral Microbiology<br />
and Dental Health Research Theme is to foster, support,<br />
and develop research into oral microbiology as it relates<br />
to dental health. The research theme will thus be a focus<br />
<strong>of</strong> scholarship and research in oral microbiology for the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Otago</strong>, and for New Zealand.<br />
THEME PERSONNEL<br />

Advisory board: Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Richard Cannon, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John<br />
Tagg, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Christopher Sissons<br />
Personnel: 26 <strong>University</strong> staff (faculty and research<br />
fellows); 22 graduate students, 8 undergraduate students;<br />
5 non-university members.<br />
THEME ACTIVITIES<br />
• Research accomplishments: Reporting Theme<br />
members published 24 peer-review papers, 7 book<br />
chapters, one other (non-peer-reviewed) article and<br />
22 conference abstracts during 2010. Competitive<br />
research funding to theme members totalled $1.29<br />
million (including intramural funding). Note that some<br />
�� ��� ���������� ������� �������� �� ���� ����� ��<br />
longer term (i.e. over three years).<br />
• Workshops: In conjunction with the Dental Caries<br />
group (<strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>), we invited, as our<br />
international speaker, Dr. Margherita Fontana from<br />
the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Michigan. Dr. Fontana has research<br />
interests both in the aetiology <strong>of</strong> dental caries as well<br />
as the teaching <strong>of</strong> cariology and caries prevention and<br />
treatment.<br />
• Postgraduate and postdoctoral support (eg Conference<br />
supplements): Seven international travel supplements<br />
to students and post-doctoral fellows were awarded<br />
in 2010.<br />
• Links & collaborations including communication with<br />
other groups: Theme members collaborate with<br />
the following institutions and companies: Fonterra<br />
Innovation Centre, AgResearch, Trinity Bioactives,<br />
Lactopharma, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Aarhus (Denmark),<br />

• Media releases and public lectures: Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John<br />
Tagg was interviewed on TV3’s programme “What’s<br />
really in our …” and appeared in TEDx Dunedin<br />
presentation (Dec 6, 2010). Darnell Kennedy (Ph.D.<br />
student under supervision <strong>of</strong> Dr. Ge<strong>of</strong>frey Tompkins<br />
and Dr. Jo-Ann Stanton) was interviewed about her<br />
research on Radio New Zealand’s “Our changing<br />
world” programme, July 29, 2010. A brief account<br />
<strong>of</strong> Dr. Kyoko Niimi’s project appeared in the <strong>Otago</strong><br />
Daily Times (July 14, 2010) with announcements <strong>of</strong><br />
successful FoRST bids from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Otago</strong>.<br />
• Summer Studentships: The Theme provided one<br />
summer studentship in 2010-11. The scholarship<br />
was awarded to Lydia Ng (4th year BDS student).<br />
A further eight undergraduate students gained<br />
studentships supported by other programmes to<br />
work with Theme members over the summer.<br />
THEME OUTCOMES<br />
• Demonstrating national leadership and international<br />
recognition for excellence. Prizes: Grace Lee won the<br />
Unilever travel award for her poster presentation at<br />
the ANZ IADR meeting in Kiama NSW in September<br />
2010. This enabled her to enter the Hatton<br />
competition at the IADR Conference in San Diego,<br />
March 2011.<br />
• Attracting significant external funding:<br />
Dr. Kyoko Niimi and Pr<strong>of</strong>. Richard Cannon were<br />
awarded a Foundation for Research Science and<br />
Technology grant to broaden their research on<br />
resistance to antifungals to address the problem<br />
<strong>of</strong> anti-helminth resistance. The project is titled<br />
“Overcoming drench resistance” ($923,392).<br />
Dr. Brian Monk secured a Marsden Fund award titled<br />
“Multifunctional azoles: A triple whammy designed to<br />
defeat drug resistance” ($840,000).<br />
• Facilitating communication and collaboration: Seven<br />
theme members received grants-in-aid to attend<br />
overseas conferences and visit collaborators.
