Research activities have included Mäori oral health, Injury<br />

Prevention (The NZ Drivers Study), New Zealand Mäori<br />

Theatre and Mäori taonga (treasured items) in the <strong>Otago</strong><br />

Museum.<br />

Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Broughton is the Principal Investigator<br />

for an International Collaborative Indigenous Health<br />

Research Partnership grant from the HRC: “Reducing<br />

disease burden and health inequalities arising from chronic<br />

dental disease among Indigenous children: an early<br />

childhood caries intervention” ($2.4M).<br />

The important approach in his Mäori health research<br />

has been the utilisation <strong>of</strong> a kaupapa Mäori methodology<br />

which he developed and successfully applied in his PhD<br />

thesis. This kaupapa Mäori methodology is being utilised in<br />

Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Broughton’s current research work,<br />

which he has presented at numerous hui and conferences.<br />

His involvement with the New Zealand Drivers Study<br />

has been to be responsible for aspects <strong>of</strong> tikanga Mäori<br />

(Mäori customs) in the research methodologies.<br />

With regard to New Zealand Mäori theatre, Associate<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Broughton was the subject <strong>of</strong> a symposium in<br />

Auckland in November 2010, facilitated by Playmarket, in<br />

which his play, “Michael James Manaia” was discussed and<br />

performed. This play will be republished in 2011 and a<br />

national tour has been scheduled for 2012.<br />

Mäori taonga in the <strong>Otago</strong> Museum: Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Broughton is a co-curator for a major exhibition which is<br />

to travel to the Shanghai Museum in China in 2011.<br />

Research and Collaboration<br />

Te Ao Mäori: Mäori Treasures from the <strong>Otago</strong> Museum,<br />

New Zealand: As a member <strong>of</strong> the Mäori Advisory<br />

Committee <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Otago</strong> Museum, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Broughton proposed that a new exhibition <strong>of</strong> taonga<br />

(treasured items) from the Museum collections be<br />

created. This was approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> the Museum.<br />

It was decided that this exhibition would travel to China<br />

and be exhibited in the main gallery <strong>of</strong> the Shanghai<br />

Museum. As a co-curator <strong>of</strong> the exhibition, Associate<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Broughton has collaborated with the <strong>Otago</strong><br />

Museum curators and the directors <strong>of</strong> the Shanghai<br />

Museum to select the 350 items and has undertaken<br />

considerable research for the associated exhibition<br />

publication. The exhibition will open in July 2011 in<br />

Shanghai.<br />

An international collaboration with Indigenous oral health<br />

research teams in Australia and Canada: Reducing disease<br />

burden and health inequalities arising from chronic dental<br />

disease among Indigenous children: an early childhood<br />

caries intervention. The New Zealand partnership <strong>of</strong> the<br />

project is being conducted in collaboration with Raukura<br />

Hauora O Tainui and the Waikato-Tainui College for<br />

Research and Development.<br />
