Ludwig’s research interests are the mechanical properties<br />

<strong>of</strong> biomaterials and their application in the dental<br />

technology field, with current involvement in research<br />

groups investigating aspects <strong>of</strong> the effect <strong>of</strong> different<br />

manufacturing procedures on the properties <strong>of</strong> alloys and<br />

ceramics used in dentistry.<br />

He also has a special interest in understanding the<br />

microstructure <strong>of</strong> reptile tooth enamel and relating the<br />

arrangement <strong>of</strong> these structures to their mechanical<br />

properties.<br />

Rosemary’s interests in higher education research<br />

include curriculum development, inquiry based learning,<br />

and educational outcomes for students in pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

programmes.<br />

Research and Collaboration<br />

Research is continuing into the development <strong>of</strong> learning<br />

skills by students as they progress through their threeyear<br />

degree programme following the introduction <strong>of</strong> this<br />

novel educational initiative. This work is undertaken in<br />

collaboration with Russell Butson, HEDC.<br />

New Zealand has taken a lead role to improving children’s<br />

oral health through the provision <strong>of</strong> oral heath education<br />

and meeting clinical treatment needs for children. Dental<br />

therapy practice has recently been introduced in the<br />

United States <strong>of</strong> America. There are collaborations with<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor D. Nash, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kentucky, Kentucky (USA)<br />

and Alaskan Dental Health Aide education, coordinated<br />

through Dr M. Williard, Anchorage, Alaska (USA).<br />

The potential <strong>of</strong> collaborative practice models in the<br />

provision <strong>of</strong> primary dental care within the oral health<br />

care delivery system in the U.S. with UCSF and the Pew<br />

Children’s Dental Campaign.<br />

Research that will contribute to a study <strong>of</strong> the<br />

international literature on the work <strong>of</strong> dental therapists<br />

(conducted by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Nash in response to a request<br />

from the Kellogg Foundation) is being undertaken with<br />

Susan M<strong>of</strong>fat.<br />
