20/20lifestylesbeforeI thought I had all the answers about diet and exercise. I’d beenthrough every diet plan including Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig,Nutrisystem, and Atkins, always looking for the “magic bullet”that would fix my problem and allow me to go back to the lifestyleI wanted. I’d go on a diet or exercise program for 3-6 months, losethe weight, hit the goal, and then spend the next 12-18 monthsgaining it all back plus a good amount more. Each time, I’d gothrough this cycle, I’d get more discouraged. I did this about six orseven times over a 20-year period. The reason I’ve had success with 20/20 LifeStyles is that I reallydon’t view it as a program. With every other weight loss plan, I wasalways done when I’d hit my goal (which meant “it’s time to putthe weight back on again”). For the first time in my life, I reallybelieve that I’m making a permanent change. I’m not going to be“done” this time. It’s empowering to admit that I’m not going tobe perfect and that it doesn’t matter. After all, if this is going to bea lifestyle change that lasts, it has to be realistic, manageable, andinclude bumps along the way.The support that I received from the entire 20/20 LifeStylesstaff was the key. I can’t narrow it down to anything in particularbecause all aspects of the program work together.Having been an athlete throughout high school and college, Ithought, “I know how to lift and run. Why do I need a trainer?”Seeing better results from my trainer (Kate Loos) turned out tobe enlightening and freeing. I could just show up to the workoutsknowing that she was clearly better at this than I’d been and turnit over to her. Soon my strength and energy level were through theroof! The dietitian and counseling sessions were also invaluable. That’s one of the aspects that had been missing from my previousattempts to get healthy. I could lose the weight, but couldn’tmaintain it or sustain the better physical and mental condition. This program has allowed me to be honest about the process forthe first time.Prior to starting the program I was on cholesterol and high bloodpressure medication for many years. I don’t take medicationsany more. My blood pressure came down nearly 40 points andmy cholesterol levels are well below normal. I could have neverimagined this happening without medication.Previously, a setback would have driven me into weight gain. Now,I immediately e-mail my “board of directors” (my dietitian, trainer, doctor, and 20/20 counselor). I simply tell them what’s going onand how I’m feeling about it. They provide objective feedbackabout the progress I’ve made, where I’m going, and why gettingcaught up in the setback doesn’t serve the changes that I’m makingin my life. As long as I can be honest with my team, I know they’llgive me the support I need to put things into perspective. When I started the program, I was using clichés like, “I’m doingthis for my kids and my wife,” and “I’m getting too old not to getin shape.” I’m starting to figure out that this program can actuallybe for ME. and mentally is the true gift I can give to my family. I don’t have to do this for anyoneelse but me. My family and friends get the benefit of being around a happier, healthierhusband, father, and friend. The 20/20 LifeStyles program and the people that run it have literally changed mylife. This is no cliché. To date, I’ve lost 116 pounds of weight and shame, and gainedconfidence, strength, and health that I never thought were possible. Believe it or not, Ithink this has been the easy part. The coming year is when I get to explore what it’s liketo actually maintain my relationships with my “20/20 board members” and experiencewhat it means to really make a permanent change for the first time in my life.
