30 Chapter 1 General Engine Overhaul, Inspection, and Repairb. Oil Pump.OILPUMP GEARSWash all parts in a solvent and drythem thoroughly.Use a brush to clean the inside of the pump housing andthe pressure relief valve chamber. Be sure all dirt andchips are removed. Remove old gasket material from thepump body and cover.Inspect the pump body and the gear teetn ior damageor wear. Check the gear end clearance with a dial indicator or Plastigage. The Plastigage method is as follows:Position the gasket on the housing, then place Plastigage on the gears as shown in fig. 45, and install thecover.Remove the cover and check the Plastigagereading.Check the gears for freedom of rotation. Check thecompression of the oil pressure relief valve spring andPlastigagecheck the clearance of the relief valve in the valvechamber.6497Fig. 45 Checking Gear End Play Typical10. EXHAUST SYSTEMThe exhaust system must be free of leaks and excessive vibration. Leaks can usually be detected visually, orin some cases, a whistling noise may be heard at thepipe connections. All the parts of the system are replaceable.Check the various sections of the exhaust system forsigns ofleaking or burning through. The slots in themuffler inlet and outlet extensions should be blocked bythe inlet and outlet pipes, respectively. However, theoverlapin either case should not be greater than 13Ainches,as passage of exhaust gases may be restricted. To correct leakage at the muffler connections, positionthe inlet and outlet pipes as previously outlined. Replace all sections that show signs of burning through.Check for possible interference between the outletpipe "kick-up" and the floor pan. If the clearance is insufficient, reposition the outlet pipe in the muffler.Exhaust system vibrations are usually caused bybroken or improperly aligned clamps. Align or replaceclamps as necessary.SERVICE LETTER REFERENCELetter No. Date SubjectChanges Informationon Page No.
