36 Chapter II 6-Cylinder Engines4. CRANKSHAFT DAMPERA single sheave crankshaft damper and pulley assembly is standard. The assembly is keyed to the crankshaft and retained with a capscrew and washer. Twothreaded holes are provided in the damper to facilitateremoval.On cars equipped with power steering, an additionalsingle sheave pulley is bolted to the crankshaft damperto drive the power steering pump.a. Removal.theRemove the radiator. Remove the drive belts.On cars equipped with power steering, remove thetwo bolts and lockwashers that fasten the power steering pump pulley to the crankshaft damper and removethe pulley.Remove the cap screw and washer from the end ofcrankshaft. Install the tool shown in fig. 13 and remove the damper.b. Installation.Lubricate the crankshaft with an oil and white leadmixture and lubricate the oil seal surface withrubbinggrease. Align the damper keyway with the keyon thecrankshaft, and start the damper on the shaft. Press thedamper on the shaft (fig. 14). Install the lockwasherand capscrew, then tighten the bolt to 85-95 footpounds torque. Install and adjust the generator belt.On cars equipped with power steering, install thepower steering pump pulley on the crankshaft damper.Tighten the retaining bolts to 23-28 foot-pounds torque.Install and adjust the power steering pump belt.Install the radiator.Fig. 13Damper RemovalFig. 14Damper Installation5. CYLINDER FRONT COVER AND CRANKSHAFT OIL SEALThe cylinder front cover is fastened to the cylinderblock by ten pan head screws and to the oil pan by twohex head bolts. Two dowels are used to locate the coveron the block. The ignition pointertiming is welded toa.the cover.NOTE: It is good practice to replace the front oilseal each time the cylinder front cover is removed.Cylinder Front Cover Removal.Remove the radiator, the crankshaft damper,and theoil pan. Remove the cover retaining screws, the cover,and the gasket.b. Oil Seal Replacement.Drive out the old seal with a pin punch, then cleanout the recess in the cover. Coat a new seal with grease,
