For this reason a second validation of the proposeddamage identification techniques was performed by using data from a seriesof damage identification tests performed on a highway bridge.For this purpose, data was used from the Z24 bridge damage identification benchmark(Maeck and De Roeck, 2003b). As already mentioned in Chapter 5, thebridge was used as a case study in the framework of the Brite Euram projectBE96-3157 (SIMCES). Within this project, a series of progressive damage testswere carried out during the summer of 1998.In order to validate the sensitivity-based damage identification method, use wasmade of the experimentally determined changes in natural frequency betweena reference and the damaged conditions. The experimentally determined naturalfrequencies, together with their uncertainties, are explicitly reported in (DeRoeck, 1999; Maeck and De Roeck, 2003b). The required normalized mode shapeestimates of the reference condition were taken from the results of the input-outputZ24 data set described in Chapter 5.The Z24 damage scenarios considered in this Chapter, all involve the same type ofdamage, i.e., the effect of the settlement of one of the supporting piers. In orderto inflict this type of damage in a controlled way, the settlement was simulated bycutting the Koppigen pier and installing a hydraulic system that can be used for
