RESIDENTNEWSLETTERFocusSPRING 2010<strong>New</strong> <strong>playground</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hazelwood</strong> <strong>Park</strong>The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong>'s first all accessplay-space at <strong>Hazelwood</strong> <strong>Park</strong>,cater<strong>in</strong>g for children <strong>of</strong> all ages andabilities, is expected to be open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>early September.The $600,000 playspace project wasbuilt <strong>in</strong> consultation with the localcommunity, schools and organisations.It provides a diversity <strong>of</strong> physical,explorative, <strong>in</strong>teractive, and imag<strong>in</strong>ativeplay opportunities, creat<strong>in</strong>g hours<strong>of</strong> fun and enterta<strong>in</strong>ment.The construction was partially fundedby a federal grant <strong>of</strong> $220,000 fromthe Regional and Local CommunityInfrastructure Program, with additionalfund<strong>in</strong>g from Plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>SA</strong>.The play-space features two slides,one <strong>of</strong> which is a dual slide, dry riverbed watercourse featur<strong>in</strong>g lush nativegarden beds, clatter bridges, a dualfly<strong>in</strong>g fox, sp<strong>in</strong>ners, a Liberty Sw<strong>in</strong>gproudly donated by Variety <strong>SA</strong>, a fivemetre tall rope climb<strong>in</strong>g net, a four waysw<strong>in</strong>g, and much more!The spectacular three metre climb<strong>in</strong>gmound is also a great place to look outover <strong>Hazelwood</strong> <strong>Park</strong>. And don't forgetto br<strong>in</strong>g your spade and bucket for thelarge sandpit where you mightuncover a buried d<strong>in</strong>os<strong>au</strong>r fossil.The play-space is set amongst anatural sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> tower<strong>in</strong>g blue andred gum trees, with plenty <strong>of</strong> room torun around and have fun. Mayor’s ReportOver the past few months there have been a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>gcommunity activities that I have been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> as well as some excit<strong>in</strong>gnew <strong>in</strong>itiatives.In June the Council adopted its 2010/11 budget and annual bus<strong>in</strong>ess plan.Every year the Council <strong>in</strong>vites comment from the community on our draftbus<strong>in</strong>ess plan. Once aga<strong>in</strong> we had strong <strong>in</strong>volvement with almost 450responses to our various forums <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a feedback form, our onl<strong>in</strong>epanel and community meet<strong>in</strong>g. I would like to convey Council'sappreciation to all those members <strong>of</strong> our community who took the time toprovide some <strong>in</strong>put to this process.On 28 June Council held a Citizenship Ceremony <strong>in</strong> which 86 new citizenswere welcomed. This event is always a very significant occasion and<strong>in</strong>deed a proud moment for our new Australians.I was pleased to <strong>of</strong>ficially open the <strong>Burnside</strong> Historical Society's tenthsem<strong>in</strong>ar for historical societies <strong>in</strong> the eastern region. The event was afabulous opportunity to emphasise our city's rich history which they areactively help<strong>in</strong>g to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>.<strong>Burnside</strong> recently hosted two events that highlighted our <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong>cultural relationships with Japan. The Dolls <strong>of</strong> Japan exhibition featured ahistoric collection <strong>of</strong> dolls which was viewed and appreciated by manypeople. The library also hosted a Japanese cultural day which I wasdelighted to <strong>of</strong>ficially open.The musically talented youth <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong> also got together <strong>in</strong> July for the<strong>Burnside</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> the Bands competition. The bands performedexceptionally well and should be commended on their abilities.With spr<strong>in</strong>g soon upon us it's a wonderful opportunity to enjoy our newestparks. SPRING 2010Bike StrategyThe <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong> will be consult<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> September on a draft BicycleStrategy as part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>’s longterm strategic plan.With an aim to have a safe and wellma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed pedestrian and cyclenetwork, the draft Strategy builds onthe 1992 Regional Area Bike Plan byreview<strong>in</strong>g the exist<strong>in</strong>g cycl<strong>in</strong>g routesand facilities <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g rid<strong>in</strong>g theroutes and community consultation.The emphasis <strong>of</strong> the Strategy is to:• Improve network visibility byenhanc<strong>in</strong>g road mark<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>frastructureand signage;• Address the barriers to cycl<strong>in</strong>gposed by arterial roads; and• Promote better <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong>bicycle plann<strong>in</strong>g with Council’sdevelopment plann<strong>in</strong>g, overallasset management, and alsorecreational plann<strong>in</strong>g.The <strong>Burnside</strong> draft Bicycle Strategywill be available to view at the<strong>Burnside</strong> Civic Centre, along with aquestionnaire to review cyclists’thoughts, needs and expectations.For more <strong>in</strong>formation on theBicycle Strategy please call theCouncil’s Manager Assets andCapital Works, Kevan Delaney on8366 4257.Spr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to play <strong>in</strong>Kens<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Park</strong>Slides, sw<strong>in</strong>gs, spr<strong>in</strong>g toys and climb<strong>in</strong>gstructures are among the fun andadventure children can have at theupgraded Kens<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Park</strong> Reserve<strong>playground</strong> <strong>in</strong> Kens<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Park</strong>.Completed <strong>in</strong> July 2010 and located<strong>in</strong> the north-eastern corner <strong>of</strong>the reserve (adjacent The Parade),the tree-house and junglethemed <strong>playground</strong> is easily seenand complements the naturalsurround<strong>in</strong>gs.A fence constructed <strong>of</strong> old railwaysleepers which blend <strong>in</strong>to the naturalelements <strong>of</strong> the reserve has also beenerected to prevent children fromhav<strong>in</strong>g direct access to The Parade.The $45,000 upgrade to the<strong>playground</strong> caters for children <strong>of</strong> allages and has a fantastic area forparents and carers to sit and engagewith their children.Speed cushion trial for Tusmore AvenueSpeed cushions along the southern end<strong>of</strong> Tusmore Avenue <strong>in</strong> Tusmore will be<strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> September 2010 for a sixmonth trial.The <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> speed cushions,a first for <strong>Burnside</strong> Council, followsconcerns by some residents <strong>of</strong>speed<strong>in</strong>g and excessive traffic volumealong this road.Manufactured from recycled rubber, theeight sets <strong>of</strong> speed cushions will be<strong>in</strong>stalled about 100 metres apart.Street light<strong>in</strong>g will also be upgraded toat least three sites to better illum<strong>in</strong>atethe humps.Over the six month trial period trafficwill be monitored along TusmoreAvenue and adjacent streets.Local residents are <strong>in</strong>vited to providefeedback, which will direct the future <strong>of</strong>the cushions.For further <strong>in</strong>formation please callCouncil's Traffic Eng<strong>in</strong>eer, DavidHayes on 8366 4264.3


Council <strong>in</strong>itiativeprovides homesfor possumsNest<strong>in</strong>g boxes for possums will be<strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong>'surban reserves under a new <strong>in</strong>itiativeby the Council <strong>in</strong> a bid to reduce thethreat <strong>of</strong> endangerment.Around 50 boxes have been built s<strong>of</strong>ar by participants <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong>Council's Men's Shed Program, with anumber also be<strong>in</strong>g donated to localenvironmental protection group F<strong>au</strong>naCare and Rescue.The r<strong>in</strong>gtail and brush tail possumsare found <strong>in</strong> the Adelaide Hills as wellas many <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong>’s bush land,parks and backyards.Boxes have already been <strong>in</strong>stalled atfour locations with high biodiversity <strong>in</strong>Waterfall Gully, Stonyfell, Auldana andKens<strong>in</strong>gton Gardens.Council’s Conservation and Land Management Team with a possum nest<strong>in</strong>g boxJapanese Dolls come to South Australia75 traditional handcrafted Japanesedolls were on display at the <strong>Burnside</strong>Civic Centre dur<strong>in</strong>g July as part <strong>of</strong> theDolls <strong>of</strong> Japan Exhibition.The collection <strong>of</strong> dolls, drawn fromacross the world, represent a part <strong>of</strong>everyday life <strong>in</strong> Japan s<strong>in</strong>ce ancienttimes.It was the first time South Australiawas <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the national tour<strong>in</strong>gexhibition, which encourages arts andcultural exchange between Australiaand Japan.The Library also hosted a Japanesecultural day to co<strong>in</strong>cide with theexhibition which featured music,dance and enterta<strong>in</strong>ment.Visitors also enjoyed brows<strong>in</strong>g theLibrary's Japanese collection, which isthe largest <strong>in</strong> South Australia.
