Council <strong>in</strong>itiativeprovides homesfor possumsNest<strong>in</strong>g boxes for possums will be<strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong>'surban reserves under a new <strong>in</strong>itiativeby the Council <strong>in</strong> a bid to reduce thethreat <strong>of</strong> endangerment.Around 50 boxes have been built s<strong>of</strong>ar by participants <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong>Council's Men's Shed Program, with anumber also be<strong>in</strong>g donated to localenvironmental protection group F<strong>au</strong>naCare and Rescue.The r<strong>in</strong>gtail and brush tail possumsare found <strong>in</strong> the Adelaide Hills as wellas many <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong>’s bush land,parks and backyards.Boxes have already been <strong>in</strong>stalled atfour locations with high biodiversity <strong>in</strong>Waterfall Gully, Stonyfell, Auldana andKens<strong>in</strong>gton Gardens.Council’s Conservation and Land Management Team with a possum nest<strong>in</strong>g boxJapanese Dolls come to South Australia75 traditional handcrafted Japanesedolls were on display at the <strong>Burnside</strong>Civic Centre dur<strong>in</strong>g July as part <strong>of</strong> theDolls <strong>of</strong> Japan Exhibition.The collection <strong>of</strong> dolls, drawn fromacross the world, represent a part <strong>of</strong>everyday life <strong>in</strong> Japan s<strong>in</strong>ce ancienttimes.It was the first time South Australiawas <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the national tour<strong>in</strong>gexhibition, which encourages arts andcultural exchange between Australiaand Japan.The Library also hosted a Japanesecultural day to co<strong>in</strong>cide with theexhibition which featured music,dance and enterta<strong>in</strong>ment.Visitors also enjoyed brows<strong>in</strong>g theLibrary's Japanese collection, which isthe largest <strong>in</strong> South Australia. Theonl<strong>in</strong>e catalogue, which can beaccessed by anyone <strong>in</strong> the state, isvery user friendly by be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> bothEnglish and Japanese languages.To f<strong>in</strong>d out more about the Library’slanguages collection, call 8366 4280.Temporary facilities for GlenungaThe Glenunga Sports and Social Clubwill have new temporary change roomsand toilets to use <strong>in</strong> November 2010.A Council decision to demolish theexist<strong>in</strong>g Progress Association Hall,change rooms and public toilets built <strong>in</strong>1930, and replace with new facilities,comes after an <strong>au</strong>dit found the orig<strong>in</strong>albuild<strong>in</strong>gs to be <strong>in</strong> poor condition.Later <strong>in</strong> the year, Council will also beconsult<strong>in</strong>g with the community onpotential options for the upgrade andimprovement <strong>of</strong> all facilities at thereserve as part <strong>of</strong> the GlenungaCommunity Hub Project.Football, soccer and cricket teams andthe little athletics squad will benefitfrom the new facilities at the busyGlenunga Reserve, with demolitionwork set to start <strong>in</strong> October.If you would like further <strong>in</strong>formationplease call the Council’s TeamLeader <strong>of</strong> Properties, Col<strong>in</strong>Brackenridge on 8366 4209.4
