SPRING 2010Bike StrategyThe <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong> will be consult<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> September on a draft BicycleStrategy as part <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>’s longterm strategic plan.With an aim to have a safe and wellma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed pedestrian and cyclenetwork, the draft Strategy builds onthe 1992 Regional Area Bike Plan byreview<strong>in</strong>g the exist<strong>in</strong>g cycl<strong>in</strong>g routesand facilities <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g rid<strong>in</strong>g theroutes and community consultation.The emphasis <strong>of</strong> the Strategy is to:• Improve network visibility byenhanc<strong>in</strong>g road mark<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>frastructureand signage;• Address the barriers to cycl<strong>in</strong>gposed by arterial roads; and• Promote better <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong>bicycle plann<strong>in</strong>g with Council’sdevelopment plann<strong>in</strong>g, overallasset management, and alsorecreational plann<strong>in</strong>g.The <strong>Burnside</strong> draft Bicycle Strategywill be available to view at the<strong>Burnside</strong> Civic Centre, along with aquestionnaire to review cyclists’thoughts, needs and expectations.For more <strong>in</strong>formation on theBicycle Strategy please call theCouncil’s Manager Assets andCapital Works, Kevan Delaney on8366 4257.Spr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to play <strong>in</strong>Kens<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Park</strong>Slides, sw<strong>in</strong>gs, spr<strong>in</strong>g toys and climb<strong>in</strong>gstructures are among the fun andadventure children can have at theupgraded Kens<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Park</strong> Reserve<strong>playground</strong> <strong>in</strong> Kens<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>Park</strong>.Completed <strong>in</strong> July 2010 and located<strong>in</strong> the north-eastern corner <strong>of</strong>the reserve (adjacent The Parade),the tree-house and junglethemed <strong>playground</strong> is easily seenand complements the naturalsurround<strong>in</strong>gs.A fence constructed <strong>of</strong> old railwaysleepers which blend <strong>in</strong>to the naturalelements <strong>of</strong> the reserve has also beenerected to prevent children fromhav<strong>in</strong>g direct access to The Parade.The $45,000 upgrade to the<strong>playground</strong> caters for children <strong>of</strong> allages and has a fantastic area forparents and carers to sit and engagewith their children.Speed cushion trial for Tusmore AvenueSpeed cushions along the southern end<strong>of</strong> Tusmore Avenue <strong>in</strong> Tusmore will be<strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> September 2010 for a sixmonth trial.The <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> speed cushions,a first for <strong>Burnside</strong> Council, followsconcerns by some residents <strong>of</strong>speed<strong>in</strong>g and excessive traffic volumealong this road.Manufactured from recycled rubber, theeight sets <strong>of</strong> speed cushions will be<strong>in</strong>stalled about 100 metres apart.Street light<strong>in</strong>g will also be upgraded toat least three sites to better illum<strong>in</strong>atethe humps.Over the six month trial period trafficwill be monitored along TusmoreAvenue and adjacent streets.Local residents are <strong>in</strong>vited to providefeedback, which will direct the future <strong>of</strong>the cushions.For further <strong>in</strong>formation please callCouncil's Traffic Eng<strong>in</strong>eer, DavidHayes on 8366 4264.3
