Mayor’s ReportOver the past few months there have been a number of interestingcommunity activities that I have been involved in as well as some excitingnew initiatives.In June the Council adopted its 2010/11 budget and annual business plan.Every year the Council invites comment from the community on our draftbusiness plan. Once again we had strong involvement with almost 450responses to our various forums including a feedback form, our onlinepanel and community meeting. I would like to convey Council'sappreciation to all those members of our community who took the time toprovide some input to this process.On 28 June Council held a Citizenship Ceremony in which 86 new citizenswere welcomed. This event is always a very significant occasion andindeed a proud moment for our new Australians.I was pleased to officially open the Burnside Historical Society's tenthseminar for historical societies in the eastern region. The event was afabulous opportunity to emphasise our city's rich history which they areactively helping to maintain.Burnside recently hosted two events that highlighted our involvement incultural relationships with Japan. The Dolls of Japan exhibition featured ahistoric collection of dolls which was viewed and appreciated by manypeople. The library also hosted a Japanese cultural day which I wasdelighted to officially open.The musically talented youth of Burnside also got together in July for theBurnside Battle of the Bands competition. The bands performedexceptionally well and should be commended on their abilities.With spring soon upon us it's a wonderful opportunity to enjoy our newestparks. The new Hazelwood Park play-space and upgraded KensingtonPark Reserve playground are the perfect spots to relax and appreciateour natural surrounds.Wendy GreinerWendy GreinerMayor of BurnsideUpcoming community consultationOver the next few months Burnside Council will be undertaking consultation with thelocal community on a wide range of important issues. These include:• Criteria for the purchase of open space in St Georges;• The State Government North South Interconnection System Project;• State Government bus routes in Gurney Road, Dulwich and Sunnyside Drive,Beaumont; and• Glenunga Hub development.If you are interested in attending or providing a submission, information about exactdates and locations will be publicised on our website and in the Council'sCommunity News column closer to the time.Candidate informationsessions for electionsInformation sessions for prospectivecandidates at the Local Governmentelections will be held by the EasternRegion Alliance (ERA) Councils duringAugust and September 2010.The sessions will include informationabout the Council and role of ElectedMembers. A representative from theSA Electoral Commission will provideinformation about the nominationprocess and conduct of the election.Candidates may go to any of thesessions run by the ERA Councils.Information packs about each Councilwill be available at all venues. SPRING 2010Bike StrategyThe City of Burnside will be consultingin September on a draft BicycleStrategy as part of the City’s longterm strategic plan.With an aim to have a safe and wellmaintained pedestrian and cyclenetwork, the draft Strategy builds onthe 1992 Regional Area Bike Plan byreviewing the existing cycling routesand facilities including riding theroutes and community consultation.The emphasis of the Strategy is to:• Improve network visibility byenhancing road markings, infrastructureand signage;• Address the barriers to cyclingposed by arterial roads; and• Promote better integration ofbicycle planning with Council’sdevelopment planning, overallasset management, and alsorecreational planning.The Burnside draft Bicycle Strategywill be available to view at theBurnside Civic Centre, along with aquestionnaire to review cyclists’thoughts, needs and expectations.For more information on theBicycle Strategy please call theCouncil’s Manager Assets andCapital Works, Kevan Delaney on8366 4257.Springing into play inKensington ParkSlides, swings, spring toys and climbingstructures are among the fun andadventure children can have at theupgraded Kensington Park Reserveplayground in Kensington Park.Completed in July 2010 and locatedin the north-eastern corner ofthe reserve (adjacent The Parade),the tree-house and junglethemed playground is easily seenand complements the naturalsurroundings.A fence constructed of old railwaysleepers which blend into the naturalelements of the reserve has also beenerected to prevent children fromhaving direct access to The Parade.The $45,000 upgrade to theplayground caters for children of allages and has a fantastic area forparents and carers to sit and engagewith their children.Speed cushion trial for Tusmore AvenueSpeed cushions along the southern endof Tusmore Avenue in Tusmore will beinstalled in September 2010 for a sixmonth trial.The installation of speed cushions,a first for Burnside Council, followsconcerns by some residents ofspeeding and excessive traffic volumealong this road.Manufactured from recycled rubber, theeight sets of speed cushions will beinstalled about 100 metres apart.Street lighting will also be upgraded toat least three sites to better illuminatethe humps.Over the six month trial period trafficwill be monitored along TusmoreAvenue and adjacent streets.Local residents are invited to providefeedback, which will direct the future ofthe cushions.For further information please callCouncil's Traffic Engineer, DavidHayes on 8366 4264.3
