Council initiativeprovides homesfor possumsNesting boxes for possums will beinstalled in the City of Burnside'surban reserves under a new initiativeby the Council in a bid to reduce thethreat of endangerment.Around 50 boxes have been built sofar by participants of BurnsideCouncil's Men's Shed Program, with anumber also being donated to localenvironmental protection group FaunaCare and Rescue.The ringtail and brush tail possumsare found in the Adelaide Hills as wellas many of Burnside’s bush land,parks and backyards.Boxes have already been installed atfour locations with high biodiversity inWaterfall Gully, Stonyfell, Auldana andKensington Gardens.Council’s Conservation and Land Management Team with a possum nesting boxJapanese Dolls come to South Australia75 traditional handcrafted Japanesedolls were on display at the BurnsideCivic Centre during July as part of theDolls of Japan Exhibition.The collection of dolls, drawn fromacross the world, represent a part ofeveryday life in Japan since ancienttimes.It was the first time South Australiawas included in the national touringexhibition, which encourages arts andcultural exchange between Australiaand Japan.The Library also hosted a Japanesecultural day to coincide with theexhibition which featured music,dance and entertainment.Visitors also enjoyed browsing theLibrary's Japanese collection, which isthe largest in South Australia. Theonline catalogue, which can beaccessed by anyone in the state, isvery user friendly by being in bothEnglish and Japanese languages.To find out more about the Library’slanguages collection, call 8366 4280.Temporary facilities for GlenungaThe Glenunga Sports and Social Clubwill have new temporary change roomsand toilets to use in November 2010.A Council decision to demolish theexisting Progress Association Hall,change rooms and public toilets built in1930, and replace with new facilities,comes after an audit found the originalbuildings to be in poor condition.Later in the year, Council will also beconsulting with the community onpotential options for the upgrade andimprovement of all facilities at thereserve as part of the GlenungaCommunity Hub Project.Football, soccer and cricket teams andthe little athletics squad will benefitfrom the new facilities at the busyGlenunga Reserve, with demolitionwork set to start in October.If you would like further informationplease call the Council’s TeamLeader of Properties, ColinBrackenridge on 8366 4209.4
SPRING 2010News in briefNew website comingKeep an eye out over the next fewmonths because the City ofBurnside will be launching a newwebsite!The dynamic website allows usersto access the information they wantmore easily and efficiently, providinga better online experience.Based on new technology, page hitreports, search queries, statisticsand community consultation, thewebsite will be more interactive andcompatible with mobile devices aswell as having a browse aloudoption.Tour guides at the Wheal Watkins Mine in the early 2000’sHistoric mine set to re-openSoon you will be able to discover thefascinating treasures and history thatlies beneath the City of Burnside withone of Adelaide's earliest silver-leadmines, Wheal Watkins, set to re-openfor tours.The Glen Osmond mine, which startedpublic tours in 1986, was forced tosuspend tours due to safetyconcerns following a rock fall in 2005.Council conducted a safety review andfound that it would cost $71,000 to bringthe 1843 mine up to a safe standard fortours through the upper section of themine.As part of the 2010/11 draft budgetCouncil was proposing to impose a $20levy for three years to help fund thepurchase of new bins for everyhousehold in Burnside.However due to overwhelmingcommunity feedback Council decidednot to impose this levy and hascommitted to undertaking further reviewon the bin management system inBurnside.This review will cover a range of areasThe funding was made possiblefollowing an anonymous $30,000donation in 2009 to the BurnsideHistorical Society to help restore thesilver-lead mine for guided tours, plus a$25,000 grant from the Department forEnvironment and Conservation.The City of Burnside allocated $16,000as part of the 2010/11 budget process,enabling the upgrade to occur.The mine is set to re-open for toursduring SA History Week in May 2011.Budget provides for bin system reviewincluding a technical review andcommunity consultation through astatistically valid telephone survey andthe Burnside Online Community Panel.A report compiled from these resultswill then be submitted to ElectedMembers for endorsement.Once the preferred method of binsystem is determined, Council willundertake further communityengagement for a likely rollout of a newbin system by mid 2011.The website will bring all of themajor stories to the forefront infeature buttons and will contain thelatest news, events, forms andpermits, library services, communityinformation, links to social mediasites and lots more.Virtual library tourAn innovative and fun virtual tour ofthe Burnside Library is available foryou to see on the social media siteYou Tube.Midnight Mannequin Madness,developed by the Library Team, is atour that will make you see thefacilities in a different way andchallenge your traditional views ofthe Library.To see the video visit You Tube andenter ‘Burnside Library’ in thesearch engine.5
