SPRING 2010<strong>New</strong>s <strong>in</strong> brief<strong>New</strong> website com<strong>in</strong>gKeep an eye out over the next fewmonths bec<strong>au</strong>se the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Burnside</strong> will be l<strong>au</strong>nch<strong>in</strong>g a newwebsite!The dynamic website allows usersto access the <strong>in</strong>formation they wantmore easily and efficiently, provid<strong>in</strong>ga better onl<strong>in</strong>e experience.Based on new technology, page hitreports, search queries, statisticsand community consultation, thewebsite will be more <strong>in</strong>teractive andcompatible with mobile devices aswell as hav<strong>in</strong>g a browse aloudoption.Tour guides at the Wheal Watk<strong>in</strong>s M<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the early 2000’sHistoric m<strong>in</strong>e set to re-openSoon you will be able to discover thefasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g treasures and history thatlies beneath the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong> withone <strong>of</strong> Adelaide's earliest silver-leadm<strong>in</strong>es, Wheal Watk<strong>in</strong>s, set to re-openfor tours.The Glen Osmond m<strong>in</strong>e, which startedpublic tours <strong>in</strong> 1986, was forced tosuspend tours due to safetyconcerns follow<strong>in</strong>g a rock fall <strong>in</strong> 2005.Council conducted a safety review andfound that it would cost $71,000 to br<strong>in</strong>gthe 1843 m<strong>in</strong>e up to a safe standard fortours through the upper section <strong>of</strong> them<strong>in</strong>e.As part <strong>of</strong> the 2010/11 draft budgetCouncil was propos<strong>in</strong>g to impose a $20levy for three years to help fund thepurchase <strong>of</strong> new b<strong>in</strong>s for everyhousehold <strong>in</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong>.However due to overwhelm<strong>in</strong>gcommunity feedback Council decidednot to impose this levy and hascommitted to undertak<strong>in</strong>g further reviewon the b<strong>in</strong> management system <strong>in</strong><strong>Burnside</strong>.This review will cover a range <strong>of</strong> areasThe fund<strong>in</strong>g was made possiblefollow<strong>in</strong>g an anonymous $30,000donation <strong>in</strong> 2009 to the <strong>Burnside</strong>Historical Society to help restore thesilver-lead m<strong>in</strong>e for guided tours, plus a$25,000 grant from the Department forEnvironment and Conservation.The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burnside</strong> allocated $16,000as part <strong>of</strong> the 2010/11 budget process,enabl<strong>in</strong>g the upgrade to occur.The m<strong>in</strong>e is set to re-open for toursdur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>SA</strong> History Week <strong>in</strong> May 2011.Budget provides for b<strong>in</strong> system review<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a technical review andcommunity consultation through astatistically valid telephone survey andthe <strong>Burnside</strong> Onl<strong>in</strong>e Community Panel.A report compiled from these resultswill then be submitted to ElectedMembers for endorsement.Once the preferred method <strong>of</strong> b<strong>in</strong>system is determ<strong>in</strong>ed, Council willundertake further communityengagement for a likely rollout <strong>of</strong> a newb<strong>in</strong> system by mid 2011.The website will br<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>of</strong> themajor stories to the forefront <strong>in</strong>feature buttons and will conta<strong>in</strong> thelatest news, events, forms andpermits, library services, community<strong>in</strong>formation, l<strong>in</strong>ks to social mediasites and lots more.Virtual library tourAn <strong>in</strong>novative and fun virtual tour <strong>of</strong>the <strong>Burnside</strong> Library is available foryou to see on the social media siteYou Tube.Midnight Mannequ<strong>in</strong> Madness,developed by the Library Team, is atour that will make you see thefacilities <strong>in</strong> a different way andchallenge your traditional views <strong>of</strong>the Library.To see the video visit You Tube andenter ‘<strong>Burnside</strong> Library’ <strong>in</strong> thesearch eng<strong>in</strong>e.5
