Buehler Education Schedule
The continuing quest for increased product quality and reliability requires a more thorough testing of materials, which includes
microstructural analysis. In addition, the analysis of increasingly complex composites and advanced materials is challenging the
adequacy of existing methods for specimen preparation. These two factors have created a demand for improved preparation and
analysis techniques. Besides offering equipment and consumables for this purpose, Buehler offers training courses for individuals to
obtain or improve the neccessary metallographic skills.
Buehler established the Institute for Microstructural Analysis in 1989, offering both general courses at an introductory level plus more
specialized courses that focus on the needs of specific industries or technologies. All courses stress supervised hands-on activities in
the laboratory with classroom instruction to help the students understand the basic principles. Courses are offered at the Buehler
headquarters in Lake Bluff, Illinois, as well as Buehler’s office in Irvine, California or a nearby location.

METALLOGRAPHIC
TECHNIQUES (3 DAYS)

This three day course is designed for those
without formal training in specimen
preparation, as well as for the experienced
metallographer who wants to be updated
on the latest techniques. The principles
and practices of metallography are taught
including the fundamentals of sectioning,
mounting, grinding and polishing.
Sessions on light optical microscopy,
etching, hardness testing, microstructural
interpretation and analysis are included.
The student will learn to apply
contemporary procedures to become
more effective in preparing various types
of specimens. Students are encouraged to
bring their own specimens.

are taught the basics of metallographic
specimen preparation of packages,
microelectronic chips, circuit boards and
flexible circuits. Attention is given to

electronic materials, mounting techniques
that protect sensitive components, and

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF
AUTOMATIC IMAGE
ANALYSIS (2 DAYS)

This is a two day course teaching the
practical applications of image analysis.
Imaging operations such as image
clarifications, thresholding (B/W & color),
binary image modifications and
measurements will be discussed. The
primary emphasis is image analysis
routine development. Analysis tasks such
as the determination of grain size, coating
thickness and many others will be
illustrated using the OmniMet® Modular
Digital Imaging System. An understanding
of microstructural evaluation and
specimen preparation is required.
Students are encouraged to bring their
own specimens for analysis. 1.2 CEUs.
