SAM’S STORYMy s<strong>to</strong>ry is not your average,everyday s<strong>to</strong>ry and neither is yours.My s<strong>to</strong>ry is different <strong>from</strong> many ofyours, but it is also similar in manyways. I lost 8 1/2 months of my life<strong>to</strong> a person that I am supposed<strong>to</strong> look up <strong>to</strong> and listen <strong>to</strong>. I lost8 1/2 months of time with myfriends and family <strong>to</strong> a person Iam supposed <strong>to</strong> love and strive <strong>to</strong>emulate. I lost 8 1/2 months ofmy life <strong>to</strong> my dad. I was abducted by my own father.On July 19, 1997, my dad <strong>to</strong>ok me <strong>from</strong> my mother. I was 10 years old. My parentshad been divorced for some time when suddenly, my dad decided <strong>to</strong> take meaway <strong>from</strong> everything I knew in my life. We traveled <strong>from</strong> one side of the country<strong>to</strong> the other, and when we finally settled in one place, reality sank in for me.“Coming home <strong>from</strong> yourabduction is half the battle.We were strong enough <strong>to</strong> makeit through the hard part, butthe road ahead is yet anotherstruggle. You might think thatwhen you arrive home <strong>from</strong>being kidnapped, everything isgoing <strong>to</strong> be okay and go rightback <strong>to</strong> normal. But life isn’tthe same. ”I was not allowed <strong>to</strong> talk <strong>to</strong> others. Icould not go <strong>to</strong> school. I couldn’t evenuse my real name. We had <strong>to</strong> changeour names and live a lie <strong>to</strong> make surenobody would find us. But on March28, 1998, in Alvin, Texas, I was found.You were found, <strong>to</strong>o. That is whatmakes our s<strong>to</strong>ries so similar. We werefound for a reason. We were given thegift of coming back <strong>to</strong> our lives, andnow it is up <strong>to</strong> us <strong>to</strong> make the mos<strong>to</strong>f it.20
