Varela should prepare anoutline of the objectives, format and structure of the database. It should becirculated to all participants by the end of 1996.Objective 3: To identify research needs and to develop the knowledge baserequired for sound conservation strategiesBoth the Concerted Action and the research project proposal contribute principallytowards achieving this Objective and the concrete steps and activities are describedbelow in more detail.Objective 4: To develop conservation strategies and methodologiesLuis Gil presented a paper describing results of studies on endangered and relicpopulations of cork oak in Spain. This paper entitled "Characterization of marginalpopulations of Quercus suber in Spain", partly a result of the previous Net'Ncrkactivities, is published in this volume.Objective 5: To raise public awareness of the threats to Quercus suberdiversityThe follow-up to this important Objective of raising public awareness was notdiscussed specifically at the meeting. Several presentations of the participants,however, illustrated its importance with examples of activities contributing to thepublic awareness about cork oak genetic resources and their cGnservation at anational level.
