Annual Report 2009-2010Saying Yesto God’s Plan

High School is a Catholic, college preparatory high school for young womenfounded by the Servants of Mary and dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God.Marian teaches the beliefs of the Roman Catholic faith in a caring and lovingcommunity atmosphere. The mission of Marian High School is to commit all its resources to the collegepreparatory education of young women, teaching them to be leaders and life-longlearners in a society where their talents and faith will give hope to the world.2

During the 2009-2010 school year, the Marian community took a closerlook at Mary’s prayer, the Hail Mary. Each Friday, the entire schoolcomes together in prayer to remember those of this community whohave gone before us in faith. We recite together the Hail Mary, askingfor Mary’s comfort and grace as we mourn the loss of our loved ones.We chose to examine Mary’s prayer as a means to better understandMary as a mortal and as the mother of God. As we reach out to her inprayer, we wanted to fully comprehend the message of the Hail Mary.Mary was so full of God’s grace that she was asked to bear His only Son.She was blessed among women as was the fruit ofher womb, Jesus. What is most amazing aboutMary is that, when she was asked to give theworld the ultimate gift, the birth of our Savior, she said “YES.” She didn’t weigh the pros andcons or consider what obstacles she mayencounter. Rather, she embraced God’s planand became a role model for young womenof faith everywhere.Looking closely at the Hail Mary and Mary’slife, we wonder if we too are embracingGod’s plan for us. Do we even knowwhat it is? How are we saying“YES” to God? As youread throughthe 2009-2010Annual Report, learn abouthow membersof the Mariancommunity aresaying yes toGod’s plan.SayingYes toGod’sPlan3

Dear Marian Family,Dear Marian Family,What an amazing first year at Marian! I officially began my journey ashead of school in July 2009. Immediately, I was welcomed with open armsby hundreds of parents at a new parent social. I will never forget theheartwarming feeling of being received and greeted with such kindness.Reflecting upon my time thus far, I must say that the girls never cease toamaze me. Every day, I am astonished at the spirit and effort put forth fromthe students. Not a day goes by without a Marian girl being applaudedfor her work in and out of the classroom. These girls are best describedas confident, independent thinking leaders. This means that they areconstantly committed to giving of themselves for the betterment of others.Time and time again, they have proven that the word “can’t” isn’t anoption, and the word “can” has no limits. They are continuously striving forexcellence in all they do. With that said, I am honored and humbled to be apart of this community.During the 2009-2010 school year we examined Mary, the mother of Godand how she said “yes” to God’s plan for her. Mary serves as a role modelfor our students, faculty and staff and, as a result, we are all looking at howwe too say “yes” to God. I am never short of examples, as you will read inthese coming pages.Marian would not be the superlative all-girl, Catholic high school it iswithout you. Marian remains fiscally strong. Our enrollment grew lastyear and our fundraising efforts were very successful. This is quite anaccomplishment during these challenging economic times. Unlike manyother nonprofit organizations, charitable contributions to Marian increasedlast year. This is a testament to the generosity of the Marian family and yourbelief in our mission and young women.Like today’s Marian girls, you are saying “yes” to God through yourunwavering commitment to Marian and its mission. Your personal andfinancial assistance directly impact everyone in this school, and for that Iam truly grateful. Furthermore, I am thankful for saying “yes” to God’s planfor me here at Marian. I have been inspired by my faith and the wonderfulpeople I am surrounded by. This assures me that no matter the trials ortribulations I encounter, I will continue to say “Yes! I can do this.” I lookforward to another school year committed to not only saying “yes” to God’splan; but also saying “yes” to the support of the Marian family.Susan M. Russell Toohey ‘82Head of School4

Dear Friends of Marian,In his book, Mary Mother of Sorrows: the Mystery of Comfort and Hope, LouisCameli states:“Identification with Mary means that Christians see herand say not only, ‘Look, there is the mother of sorrows,’and admire her. They also say, ‘Here is a lifeand faith pattern which I can call my own.’”This statement is reflective of what the Marian community was studyingduring the past school year. The purpose of choosing the theme, “Saying‘Yes’ to God’s Plan,” was to help the staff and students recognize that Maryis indeed a role model for us all. While studying the ‘Hail Mary,’ staff andstudents were contemplating how Mary’s life and faith connects with theirown. Her ‘Yes!’ to God went far beyond agreeing to become the Motherof Jesus. Her trip to visit Elizabeth, her life as a young wife and mother, watching her Son grow from baby to manhood, losing her spouse, the agonyof watching her Son being persecuted and put to death, and her place in theChristian community after His resurrection, all of these were done in lightof her positive response to God’s call in her life. Mary’s life changed at thetime of the Annunciation. Her whole life then revolved around saying ‘Yes’ toall God had in store for her. It was a daily recommitment. This is the life andfaith pattern we can emulate. As you can see in the ‘Year in Review’ section of this report, Marian studentswere involved in a myriad of activities from academic to extracurricular andathletic. Throughout all the achievements and challenges of the year, theseyoung women had daily opportunities to live as Mary did by following theMission of Marian and the core values which flow through that Mission. In doing so, these students of today grow into the faith-filled leaders in theworld tomorrow. It’s a pleasure being back in Omaha and having the opportunity to be partof the Marian community once again. As both a graduate and a Servant ofMary, I’m proud of the growth and accomplishments that Marian has hadover the years. It’s wonderful to see that the values on which the school wasestablished are still strong today and will be carried out to the world by thenew alums each year.May Mary continue to provide a ‘life and faith pattern’ for you all.Sr. Mary Gehringer, OSM ‘66Provincial, Servants of Mary5

I am blessed to have learned this at an early age. I am blessed thatMarian taught me this so that I can share it with the world.”19

The hope she has broughtto the families of the OPS school system isunparalleled.Joe and Bonnie SheaMarian High School honored Joe and BonnieShea, pictured back row center, with the2010 Marian Award for the many years ofselfless service they have given to the Omahacommunity and Marian High School. If one had to use a word, or better yet threewords to describe the Sheas, they would be:Faith. Family. Friends. These are thecornerstones of the Sheas’ life.Let’s begin with Faith: the Catholic faithhas been the foundation upon which Joeand Bonnie have built their life. They havealways trusted in God’s plan for them. Faithand family go hand in hand for the Sheas.Joe and Bonnie put family first. They arevery active parents in the lives of their eightchildren, three boys and five girls and their21 grandchildren.Joe and Bonnie have been members of St.Phillip Neri Parish for 35 years, and they havebeen more than just parishioners. Joe andBonnie sent their eight children to gradeschool there, and as a result, Bonnie becamea permanent fixture at St. Phil’s. She wasa Room Mom for all of their kids’ classes, which kept her quite busy. In 1986, Bonniewas given the St. Philip Neri Volunteer ofthe Year Award. Joe was an equally activedad, as his children would say: “He coachedeverything under the sun”—baseball, basketball, and softball to name a few.The Sheas commitment to Catholiceducation continued with Marian for theirgirls and Creighton Prep for their boys. There’s an interesting fact about Joe andBonnie Shea and their five daughters, Kelly,Katie, Kristy, Maggie and Maddie. Marian isblessed to have had 20 wonderful years withthe Sheas as current parents because each oftheir daughters was four or more years apartin age, so each daughter walked these hallsone at a time.Marian kept the Sheas quite busy for thosetwenty years and beyond. Joe and Bonniewere both active in the Home & SchoolAssociation, Bonnie worked on numerousFEST events and the two were supportersof FAME (Fine Arts Enthusiasts at Marian). In recent years, Bonnie chaired this parentorganization as their youngest Maddie, whograduated in 2009, was a very active thespianand choir member. Joe and Bonnie nevermissed a single performance. In fact, in 2009,the Select Women’s Choir, of which Maddiewas a member, competed in its first Festivalof Gold in New York City. With a personalfondness for NYC, Joe and Bonnie took thelead in planning this trip. The trip was a hugesuccess and, as a result, Miss Cathy Pruittecommissioned Bonnie’s assistance to planthe 2010 trip to Chicago, and Bonnie obligedher.Currently one can find Joe working nextto his three sons and two sons-in-law atRochester Armored Car Company, whereJoe is president, and one can find Bonnielunching with her “moms club” whichconsists of her four daughters, Kelly, Katie,Kristy and Maggie.Faith, family and finally friends: For those ofyou who do not know Joe and Bonnie, youcannot find a nicer, friendlier couple. It isno wonder that so many people call thesetwo “friend.” With their faith in God andtheir family at their side, Joe and Bonniealways have time for others, no matter theirobligations. As their son Bill puts it: “Myparents taught me how to enjoy all aspects oflife. No matter the situation or how busy theywere with work, they always seemed happyand made everyone that surrounded themfeel the same.”The Sheas are truly living testaments of theServite charism of service, compassion andcommunity.21

Current ParentTracy Wernsman always knew she wanted to be a mom. As an educator with Omaha Public Schools, Tracy fell in love with her students time and time again, butshe knew that life was not easy for some of them. Some of her students were in foster care because of unpleasant conditions at home. She wanted to be morethan just a teacher to these students; she wanted to be the safe haven for them. At the end of her father’s life, as she cared for him in her home, she told him ofher dream to be a mom and received his blessing to adopt.Tracy quickly began the process to become an approved foster parent, with her ultimate goal to adopt a child in need. At the end of her training, she was askedwhat kind of child she wanted to help. “I told the advocate that when I closed my eyes I saw a seven-year-old girl,” says Tracy. “The advocate began to cry, thensaid, ‘I have a girl I want you to meet.’”Tracy was introduced to Tamarrah, then seven years of age. The two immediately bonded. When Tamarrah went to live with Tracy, Tamarrah’s four-year-oldbrother, David, stayed with the previous foster family. “They said they wanted to adopt him, and I was happy to know that would happen for David,” says Tracy. However, 10 months later, through unforeseen circumstances, David was left without a home. “An advocate called me immediately to see if I would care for himwhile she worked on a plan,” says Tracy. “After one night in my home, I knew David was to be a part of my family. Tamarrah was overjoyed to be with her littlebrother again.”Adopting David and Tamarrah was a gift from God explains Tracy. “Tamarrah was the girl I pictured when I thought about my family,” says Tracy. “I realize nowthat David was part of this vision too, I just needed Tamarrah to show him to me.”Tracy says Marian is like an extra vitamin for Tamarrah. “I knew seven years ago, when Tamarrah became my daughter, that she would attend Marian one day,”says Tracy. “Our lives are already grounded by our faith. Marian simply extends that foundation and continues to enrich and fortify her life.”Marian is doing its part to support Tracy as a mother. “Marian recognizes the vocation I was called to, motherhood,” says Tracy. “The teachers, counselors andstaff are all helping Tamarrah find her giftedness, which in turn is supporting God’s plan for me as mother to her.”29

She was inspired by and completely devoted to Our Ladyof Sorrows and, because of this devotion, she held the most affectionatelove for the Blessed Sacrament. As the Superioress of the Order, St.Juliana set a noble example for her fellow sisters through care of thesick, heroic deeds of charity and other works of mercy. She sufferedfrom a disease of the stomach which prevented her from taking food, yet St. Juliana endured the agony silently with a constant cheerfulnesswhich was an inspiration to those around her.As a member of the St. Juliana Falconieri benefactor circle, you aremaking the same significant sacrifice the Servants of Mary did when, guided by their faith, they opened Marian High School in 1955.Rick & Nancee BergerJim & Anne GreischPete & Jeri PiechoskiScott Robertson & Gail Werner-RobertsonDoug & Elaine WilwerdingOne of two women to be declared a Doctor of the Church, St. Teresaof Avila is the founder of the Discalced Carmelites, a more primitivetype of Carmelite nun. Suffering from a severe illness that left herlegs paralyzed for three years, St. Teresa experienced a vision of “thesorely wounded Christ” that changed her life. She focused her faith onChrist’s passion and set her vision on the reformation of her order ofCarmelites. Saint Teresa practiced mental prayer to keep Christ insideof her. She said, “Prayer is an act of love, words are not needed. St. Therese of LisieuxPatron of the missions Feast Day: October 1up to $99With fierce determination and faith, St. Therese of Lisieux soughtpermission from the Holy Father himself to enter the CarmeliteConvent at the unusually young age of 15. Saint Therese was raised inan atmosphere of faith, where every virtue and aspiration was carefullynurtured and developed. This resulted in St. Therese becoming aPatroness of Missionaries; she also initiated “the little way” – doingsimple but powerful things for the love of God.Supporting Marian at this level shows that what may be perceived as asimple and small gift can, in reality, make a powerful difference.3 MColleen Connor Abraham ‘59David Drzaic & Amy Adams ‘81Jim & Patricia Haney Adams ‘70Jim The check represents a four-year, $50 pergraduate pledge to Marian’s annual giving program, The Marian Fund.In 2007, Marian’s Advancement Program began meeting withthe senior class to discuss women in philanthropy and theimportance of financially supporting organizations that they careabout and that they want to see advance in their mission andvision. The program, called the Senior Gift Pledge, is designed toencourage and inspire graduating seniors to continue sharingtheir resources with Marian. Because more than half of Marianstudents graduate with help from tuition assistance, the SeniorGift Pledge is a way for students to say thank you and directlyimpact their peers, schoolmates and future Marian girls. The first class to participate, the Class of 2007, took this lessonto heart and collected four-year, $50 pledges--$5 the first year ofcollege, $10 the second, $15 the third and $20 the fourth--frommore than 83% of its members.
