16Women of <strong>Marian</strong> RetreatIn February, <strong>Marian</strong>’s Alumnae RelationsProgram sponsored Compassion for Self– A Woman’s Challenge retreat. The retrea<strong>to</strong>ffered a variety of programs designed <strong>to</strong>nurture the spiritual needs of women in<strong>to</strong>day’s all <strong>to</strong>o busy world. Three keynotespeakers – Mary Eileen Andreasen, <strong>Marian</strong>alumnae Barbara Gehringer ‘82 and RoseFallon Roeder ‘66– group discussions,personal reflection time, a pampering hour,breakfast and lunch were included in thisretreat experience.All women of the <strong>Marian</strong> communitywere invited, including alumnae, mothersof students and alumnae, sisters,grandmothers, friends, neighbors, presentand former <strong>Marian</strong> faculty and staff andServants of Mary.This is the fifth year the Alumnae Programhas sponsored this special opportunity forrelaxation, rejuvenation and renewal.<strong>Marian</strong> French Students SpendSpring Break in ParisTwelve <strong>Marian</strong> French students spent theirspring break (March 6-15) in Paris withFrench teacher Janet Tuttle and Spanishteacher Beth Shanahan. The upper-levelFrench students spent three hours eachmorning studying French at the AccordLanguage <strong>School</strong> and spent their afternoonssightseeing. Sights included: Eiffel Tower,Musée d’Orsay, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe,Champs-Elysées, Notre Dame, Sacré Coeur,and Montmartre. The group also had theopportunity <strong>to</strong> celebrate Sunday mass atNotre Dame.The World Languages Department at<strong>Marian</strong> is dedicated <strong>to</strong> not only the teachingof a different language, but also educatingstudents on the diverse cultures in ourworld. Every year, upper-level Spanish orFrench students spend their spring breaksin Spain or France as a way <strong>to</strong> submergestudents in<strong>to</strong> the language and culture fordeeper understanding and appreciation.Spanish students will have the chance <strong>to</strong>travel <strong>to</strong> Spain over Spring Break 2011.Mother/daughter alumnae Colleen O’Malley Jackson’88 and Barb Wade O’Malley ‘63Blair Harms ‘10, Brenna Prendergast ‘10,Jenna Schmidt ‘10, Emily Reznicek ‘10 pose in fron<strong>to</strong>f the Eiffel TowerNew State Banners RevealedIn April, <strong>Marian</strong>’s English Departmentunveiled its official state banners for theNSAA sanctioned activities of Speech andJournalism in the cafeteria above the displaycases. The programs have enjoyed greatsuccess over <strong>Marian</strong>’s his<strong>to</strong>ry and the pointsfrom their District and State competitionsalways contribute <strong>to</strong> the school’s overallChampionship status.The Speech banner lists DistrictChampionships in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and2007, District Runner-Up in 1984, 1985, 1986,1987, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 2008 and StateRunner -Up in 2007.The Journalism banner lists StateChampionships in 2006, 2007 and 2008 andState Runner-Up in 2003, 2005 and 2009.The Speech and Journalism Programsat <strong>Marian</strong> are unique in that they arecurricular and extracurricular. Studentswho are enrolled in Novice CompetitiveSpeaking or Honors Varsity CompetitiveSpeaking are required <strong>to</strong> compete in atleast 3 <strong>to</strong>urnaments throughout the year.Likewise, student who are taking JournalismI film, edit and produce weekly podcasts,and students in Honors Journalism IIcreate, from cover <strong>to</strong> cover, <strong>Marian</strong>’s annualyearbook and monthly newspaper.
