Social Studies TeacherSpends Time in KoreaSocial Studies and Government teacherSusan Juza was chosen by the KoreaFoundation <strong>to</strong> participate in the KoreanStudies Workshop for American Educa<strong>to</strong>rs.The Workshop provides U.S. educa<strong>to</strong>rs withfully-funded study visits <strong>to</strong> Korea.Meet the New Head of <strong>School</strong>In July 2009, <strong>Marian</strong> welcomed a new Head of <strong>School</strong>, Susan Russell Toohey. As a 1982alumna, she knows first-hand the value of a <strong>Marian</strong> education. In addition, Susan chose<strong>Marian</strong> for her own daughters, one a current student and the other a 2009 graduate.With this monumental change, <strong>Marian</strong> began a new tradition and invited all parents <strong>to</strong> asocial event <strong>to</strong> meet the new head of school and hear her vision for the future. The event waswell-received, with more than 100 parents in attendance.Girls State – Noelle Mapes ‘10Noelle Mapes ’10 represented <strong>Marian</strong> at theAmerican Legion Auxiliary Nebraska GirlsState Convention. While there, her peerselected her governor of the convention. Morethan 420 young women represented theirhigh schools at the event.The Korean Studies Workshop sent 100secondary school social studies educa<strong>to</strong>rsfrom the United States <strong>to</strong> Korea <strong>to</strong>participate in an intensive, 12-day workshop.Sponsored entirely by the Korea Foundation,the workshop is designed <strong>to</strong> enhance mutualunderstanding between the people of Koreaand the United States by inviting certainU.S. educa<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> visit Korea and then sharetheir experiences with fellow Americansupon their return. Following participation inthe workshop, participants are required <strong>to</strong>submit an impact report <strong>to</strong> the Institute ofInternational Education.Social Studies Department Chair Tom Bakerparticipated in this experience the previoussummer.Girls State is a nonpartisan programthat teaches young women responsiblecitizenship and love for God and country.Each citizen at Girls State runs for office,either at the city, county or state level.Noelle’s campaign for governor secured herthe primary election win, she then debatedwith the other candidate prior <strong>to</strong> the generalelection. Noelle’s inauguration was held inthe State Capi<strong>to</strong>l Rotunda, where she gaveher inauguration speech. Afterward, shemet with Gov. Heineman in his office at theState Capi<strong>to</strong>l.9
