Field Day at Creigh<strong>to</strong>nOn May 7, 2010, more than 1,300 people attended <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s annual and belovedField Day.For the first time in <strong>Marian</strong>’s 52-year Field Day his<strong>to</strong>ry, this annual event was not held oncampus or at Benson Park. Due <strong>to</strong> the lack of space at both Benson Park and in <strong>Marian</strong>’sgymnasium, <strong>Marian</strong> <strong>to</strong>ok Field Day on the road. To accommodate family, friends, alumnae andother special guests, Field Day is now held at the D.J. Sokol Arena inside the Wayne and EileenRyan Women’s Athletic Center on Creigh<strong>to</strong>n University’s campus.This year’s Field Day themes were Freshmen, “A Fresh Fairy Tale” in jade and purple;Sophomores, “Sophomore Seuss” in red and turquoise; Juniors, “Juniors in Bloom” in greenand bright gold; and Seniors, “Remember the Seniors” in blue and fuchsia.The day began with <strong>Marian</strong> students paradingin full costume, chanting Field Day rhymes,from the Josie Harper Center <strong>to</strong> the Arena,straight down Creigh<strong>to</strong>n’s main thoroughfareknown as the Mall. Once inside the Arena,the judge’s booklet committees made theirpresentations, followed by cheerleaders, classdemonstrations and the no<strong>to</strong>rious tug-o-war.The students held a dance party on the arenafloor while the judges’ rankings were tallied.In the end, after back-<strong>to</strong>-back fourth place,the Juniors in Bloom <strong>to</strong>ok home the covetedField Day cup.The purpose of Field Day is a multi-layeredone. While each class helps one another<strong>to</strong> “find its spirit” through class mascots,demonstrations, costumes and cheerleaders,Field Day also provides <strong>Marian</strong> girls witha chance <strong>to</strong> acquire real-life skills such asteamwork, creativity, sportsmanship andproblem solving.State Soccer<strong>Marian</strong>’s Varsity Soccer Team, coachedby Ed Dudley, claimed the 2010 StateChampionship title on May 17, giving <strong>Marian</strong>50 state athletic titles <strong>to</strong> its name. This isthe tenth Championship for <strong>Marian</strong>’s soccerprogram.May Crowning<strong>Marian</strong> held its annual May Crowning ritualin May, the month of Mary, the mother ofGod. <strong>Marian</strong> honors Mary each year with anall-school ceremony, and since the 2005-2006, 50th anniversary school year, somespecial guests have been an integral part ofthe event.Second-grade daughters of <strong>Marian</strong>alumnae who received the Sacrament ofthe Eucharist are invited <strong>to</strong> be a part of thisannual ceremony. Wearing their First HolyCommunion dresses, 27 second gradersprocessed with the May Queen and placeda rose at the foot of the statue of Mary,signifying their blossoming faith.The Class of 2010 chose classmate AmandaSchumacher as May Queen. She was chosenfor her courage <strong>to</strong> stand up for what isright, even when it may be unpopular <strong>to</strong> doso; her work <strong>to</strong> achieve social justice; hercompassionate presence; her faithfulness asa friend; and her inspiration of her peers <strong>to</strong>follow the example of Jesus. The ceremonyconcluded with Amanda placing a crown offlowers on the statue of Mary’s head.The May Crowning ceremony signifies howthe <strong>Marian</strong> community crowns Mary byliving her example daily. <strong>Marian</strong> hopes thateach student finds her personal relationshipwith Mary, a relationship that will help herserve, be true <strong>to</strong> who she is and accept God’splan for her.17
