Rachel WittValedic<strong>to</strong>rian 2010Rachel Witt is <strong>Marian</strong>’s Class of 2010 Valedic<strong>to</strong>rian. She is bestdescribed as an asset <strong>to</strong> her class because of her tenacity, integrity,poise, maturity and incredible work ethic. Rachel’s teachers say shehas a keen understanding of what it takes <strong>to</strong> be successful.With a variety of interests and accomplishments, from a Gold medalin drawing <strong>to</strong> volunteering at a local grade school, Rachel strives <strong>to</strong>give back <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Marian</strong> community. She is a member of numeroushonor societies and has maintained the <strong>to</strong>p position in her classall four years. When Rachel wasn’t hitting the books, she played onthe softball team and participated in various service opportunities.Al<strong>to</strong>gether, Rachel’s hard work and ambitious outlook made her amost deserving Valedic<strong>to</strong>rian.Rachel is attending Marquette University.Kathleen BorghoffSaluta<strong>to</strong>rian 2010The 2010 Saluta<strong>to</strong>rian Kathleen Borghoff is no stranger <strong>to</strong> dedication.She has been a member of a variety of sports teams, including crosscountry, soccer and basketball. She is involved not only in sportsbut also in numerous honor societies and clubs such as YoungDemocrats and Big Sisters. Kath also volunteers her time at theParson’s House.Kath’s counselor shared, “when in college, Kathleen will challengeher professors and push her peers <strong>to</strong> excel as they work besideher in labs and in the classroom.” Despite a rigorous course loadand extracurricular activities, Kath maintained straight A’s. Hercommitment and drive set Kathleen on an admirable path.Kathleen completed her first semester at University of Miami.Amanda Schumacher<strong>Marian</strong> Girl of The YearThe honor of <strong>Marian</strong> Girl of the Year is the highest honor a <strong>Marian</strong>graduate can receive. It is bes<strong>to</strong>wed upon a young woman who theteachers feel exemplifies the Six Core Values in their truest senseand lives those values on a daily basis. This year’s recipient, AmandaSchumacher, is no exception. In reviewing the Core Values, theseexamples are present in her life.Community- Amanda is a member of soccer, basketball, track andcross country teams.<strong>Marian</strong> Identity-She received the Marie Guyot LeadershipScholarship and is a Campus Ministry Core Team member.Service- Amanda served as a Class Officer and participated innumerous volunteer activities.Empowerment-She was on the 4-H Leadership Council and NationalHonor Society.Spirituality – Amanda also was a senior and freshman retreat leader.Compassion- Amanda volunteered for the junior wheelchair campand Immanuel rehab unit.Amanda also received the honor of May Queen this year from herclassmates. It is very rare <strong>to</strong> have a class identify its spiritual leaderas the same person the faculty sees as <strong>Marian</strong> Girl of the Year, yet noone seemed surprised that Amanda’s amazing grace was recognizedby both her peers and her teachers. It seems that every personwho speaks of this young woman recognizes the sincerity of all hercontributions. <strong>Marian</strong> is grateful <strong>to</strong> have been blessed with thisstudent.Amanda is attending Rockhurst University.Lisa GehringService AwardFounded in 1955, The Servants of Mary developed a community ofreligious women who wished <strong>to</strong> be a compassionate presence <strong>to</strong>those who suffer or are in need. Today, Lisa Gehring serves as anexemplar of their mission. Devoted <strong>to</strong> sharing her compassion andcommitment <strong>to</strong> the Servants of Mary, she spent all four years visitingthe Sisters in the motherhouse and was service site coordina<strong>to</strong>r forthe motherhouse her senior year.Lisa’s service and leadership go beyond her time with the Sisters. Shewas a member of the Polar Plunge Board of Direc<strong>to</strong>rs and helpedorganize hundreds of students <strong>to</strong> fund raise for Special OlympicsNebraska. Lisa also was president of the Spanish Club and a memberof numerous honor societies. This is not the first time Lisa hasbeen recognized for her leadership contributions <strong>to</strong> the <strong>Marian</strong>community. She received the Outstanding Sophomore Award and theMarie Guyot Leadership Scholarship.Lisa identifies with those she serves and shares her gifts witheveryone she meets.Lisa is attending Miami University in Ohio.24
