Slecht onderhoud, termietenen houtrot, als gevolg van de vele lekkages, waren er deoorzaak van dat het geelgrijze kerkgebouw uit overwegingen van veiligheidgesloten moest worden. Voor velen was het een “vreselijke aanblik”,om deze majestueuze kerk te zien staan in een stalen ondersteuningsstellage,die moest voorkomen dat er verdere verzakkingen optraden enhet bouwwerk zou instorten. Nadat het unieke houten gebouw dat ingotische stijl is opgetrokken in december 1988 werd gesloten, duurde hettien jaar voordat een deskundige was gevonden die een onderzoek koninstellen naar de staat waarin het kerkgebouw verkeerde. Op basis vanzijn bevindingen zou dan aan renovatie kunnen worden begonnen.Het onderzoek door de Nederlandse architect en deskundige op hetgebied van gotische kerken, Polman, werd vertaald in een projectdossierdat is later gebruikt in de zoektocht naar financiering.De eerste concrete renovatieplannen kwamen in 2002 ter sprake.Met de renovatie was de Stichting Beheer Kathedraal (Stibeka) belast.De stichting ging aan de slag om fondsen voor haar plannen te zoekenen de herrijzenis van het statige gebouw kwam in een stroomversnellingterecht. “We zijn bijna tien jaar bezig geweest met het zoeken naariemand die een diagnose durfde te stellen. De kathedraal huilde aan allekanten, maar omdat deze houten constructie uniek is durfde niemandhet aan,” zei pater Esteban Kross in een interview. De uitvoering van hetproject werd echter vertraagd, omdat toezeggingen van Nederland lateromgebogen moesten worden naar de Europese Unie. Brussel ging na veellobbywerk van Nederlandse parlementariersen de Surinaamse regering akkoord meteen ondersteuning van 2.8 miljoen euro.De Surinaamse regering kwam in met eenhalf miljoen euro.De renovatiewerkzaamheden die werden uitgevoerddoor het aannemingsbedrijf Remaszouden ruim vier jaar in beslag nemen.In eerste aanleg gebeurde dat onder directievan het Italiaanse architectenbureauARS Progetti. Maar vanwege communicatieproblemenen de eigengereidheid van deItaliaanse deskundigen werd het directiecontractna drie jaar opgezegd.The Roman Catholic Church was inaccessible to the public for morethan 22 years for fear of collapse. For many itwas a terrible sight to see this majestic church in steel support scaffoldingthat had to prevent further sagging leading to a total collapse. After theunique wooden building, erected in Gothic style, was closed in December1988, it took ten years before an expert was found able to determine thestate of the church building. Based on his findings a start could be madewith the renovation. The investigation by the Dutch architect and expertin the field of Gothic churches, Polman, was translated into a project fileused in the search for financing.The first concrete renovation plans came up in 2002. The foundationStitching Beheer Cathedral (Stibeka) was charged with the renovation.The foundation started to look for financing for her plans and the resurrectionof the imposing building gained momentum. “It took about tenyears to find someone who dared make a diagnosis. The cathedral wasslanting on all sides but because of the unique wooden constructionnobody was willing to do it”, says padre Esteban in an interview. The implementationof the project was delayed because commitments made byThe Netherlands had to be altered to the European standards. After muchlobbying by Dutch members of parliament and the <strong>Surinam</strong>ese government,Brussels agreed with a financial assistance of 2.8 million Euros.The <strong>Surinam</strong>ese government contributed half a million euro.The renovation activities performed by thebuilding contractor Remas would finally lastlonger than four years. In first instance this tookplace under the direction of the Italian architecturalbureau ARS Progetti. But because of communicationproblems and the obstinacy of theItalian experts the direction contract was canceledafter three years. Local architects PhilipDikland and Carl Hest finished the job. Theymade a few modifications for further support ofthe solutions the Italians had devised. So next tothe pulling cables a steel construction was addedto stabilize the building. After the restorationthe Cathedral is still 20 cm out of plumb; beforethe restoration this was as much as 56 cm!w w w. f l y s l m . c o m11
