Ivan Cairo232 jaar oude erfenis van Duitse zendelingenIn 1778 werd op de plaats waar nu de GroteStadskerk staat een kerk gesticht door deEvangelische Broedergemeente <strong>Surinam</strong>e(EBGS). Al in 1735 waren de eerste zendelingennaar <strong>Surinam</strong>e gekomen. Ze mochten echter noggeen openbare kerkdiensten houden. De kerkzoals die er nu staat is in de 19e eeuw ontstaandoor vele verbouwingen van het eerste gebouw.In 1847 kreeg het de huidige vorm en omvang.De kerk wordt van de straat gescheiden doorbakstenen pijlers met smeedijzeren hekwerkdaartussen. Hij is 30 meter breed, drie min ofmeer gelijke delen van drie traveeën vormen degevel. Een niet al te steil eenvoudig leienzadeldakbedekt het gebouw. De diepte is 19 meter.De achtergevel heeft enorme luiken die intwee, respectievelijk drie paren boven elkaarzijn opgehangen en het beschot is soms wel 40cm breed. De middenbeuk, middelste centralepand van een kerk van achter (west) naar hetaltaar toe (oost), is 11 meter hoog. Galerijen vantwee verdiepingen lopen langs alle wanden, ondersteunddoor kolommen.Aan de kopse kant bij de preekstoel zijn die smal,bij de tegenoverliggende kop, bij het orgel, zijnze juist extra breed. De bovenste galerij is inkamers verdeeld. Het interieur is voornamelijkwit geschilderd; de banken, de preekstoel, hetorgel, de wanden. Links (ten zuiden) van de kerkligt de pastorie. Daar weer naast liggen het kerkelijkbureau en het logeergebouw. Op het terreinstaan verder nog enkele kleine gebouwen,waaronder een torentje.De Grote Stadskerk in haar oorspronkelijke vormwas niet zo groot als nu en diens ontwikkelingen groei is inherent aan de ontwikkeling die deEBGS in <strong>Surinam</strong>e heeft doorgemaakt.De geschiedenis van de EBGS dateert van7 augustus 1735 toen de eerste HernhutterzendelingenGeorge Piesch, Georg Berwig enHeinrich Christof van Larisch in <strong>Surinam</strong>e aankwamenom het woord van God te verkondigen.Ze moesten dat doen onder zeer moeilijkeomstandigheden en hun missie werd doorsommigen zelfs als mislukt gekwalificeerd.Ze keerden terug naar hun land.The mother Church,232 year old heritage from German missionariesIn 1778 a church was founded by the EBGSon the location where the Great City Churchnow stands. In 1735 the first missionarieshad already arrived in <strong>Surinam</strong>e. But they werenot allowed yet to hold public church services.The church as it stands now arose in the 19thcentury through the many modifications of thefirst construction.In 1847 it obtained its final form and dimensions.The church is separated from the street withbrick pillars with wrought iron fencing betweenthem. It is 30 meters wide; three more or lessequal bays make up the front. A not too steepsimple slate saddle roof covers the building.Its depth is 19 meters. The rear side has enormoushatches that are hung in two, respectivelythree pairs above each other and the partitionsare sometimes 40 cm wide. The nave, the centralpart of the church running from the rear(West) to the altar (East) is 11 meters high. Twostoreygalleries run along all the walls, supportedby columns. On the side of the pulpit they aresmall and on the opposite side at the organ theyare extra wide. The upper gallery is divided intorooms. The interior is primarily painted in white,the benches, the pulpit, the organ and the walls.On the left (the south side) of the church is thepresbytery. Next to it are the Church office andthe guest house. There are a few small buildingsscattered on the grounds, including a littletower.The Great City Church in its original form wasnot as large as it is today and its developmentand growth are intrinsic to the development ofthe EBGS in <strong>Surinam</strong>e.The history of the EBGS dates back to August7, 1735 when the first Moravian missionariesGeorge Piesch, Georg Berwig and HeinrichChristof van Larisch arrived in <strong>Surinam</strong>e tospread the word of God. They had to do thisunder very difficult circumstances and their missionwas qualified by some as a failure. They returnedto their country.In the beginning of November 1765 a secondmission was undertaken to <strong>Surinam</strong>e. Then thebrothers Johan Christof Schmidt, Johan Gottlieband Christoph Kersten came to Paramaribo.They came from the German place Herrnhut andafter two years, on February 27, 1767 occupied ahouse at the corner of the Steenbakkerij- andMaagdenstraat streets.Church services were held upstairs in the atticand congregation members were primarilyenslaved Negroes from Africa. The first convertwas baptized on July 21, 1776 by ChristophKersten, followed by eighteen more that sameyear. This marked the beginning of the CreoleCommunity in Paramaribo; in what grew ultimatelyto what the EBGS is today, a multi-ethnicreligious community.Since the attic became too small for the growingnumber of worshippers it was decided to builda church at the location where the Great CityChurch now stands. The ceremonial consecrationtook place on May 31, 1778 and thus startedthe history of the Great City Church.But soon that church building became toosmall for the still growing number of members.But the money for the expansion was not available.Extra collection and voluntary contributionfinally made the expansion possible.w w w. f l y s l m . c o m19
