had less room to move <strong>in</strong> some periods—like 1967, when hostility aga<strong>in</strong>st Israel <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Socialist Block reached a peak—than <strong>in</strong> others, like the 1980s. 18 After 1989, we will see<br />

briefly th<strong>at</strong>—though a world has changed s<strong>in</strong>ce the Weimar Republic—the crucial<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ant <strong>of</strong> the st<strong>at</strong>e and its form and <strong>in</strong>tentions has come back <strong>in</strong> some important<br />

ways to its start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> 1933. Just as the different forms <strong>of</strong> the German st<strong>at</strong>e found<br />

<strong>Jews</strong> valuable as rhetorical and symbolic devices <strong>in</strong> def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g themselves, those German<br />

st<strong>at</strong>es went far <strong>in</strong> determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the level <strong>of</strong> freedom <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jews</strong> to def<strong>in</strong>e themselves. <strong>Jews</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

study <strong>in</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> politics, the <strong>in</strong>tent <strong>of</strong> the st<strong>at</strong>e, and the power <strong>of</strong> people to live<br />

their lives <strong>in</strong> differ<strong>in</strong>g visions <strong>of</strong> different Germanies.<br />

more to p<strong>at</strong>ronage politics by the most important Jewish leaders. This study focuses a bit less on<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutional give-and-take than Geller, look<strong>in</strong>g more closely <strong>at</strong> efforts by <strong>in</strong>dividuals and groups to run<br />

their own lives <strong>in</strong> the context <strong>of</strong> differ<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>at</strong>e forms.<br />
