ebuild. <strong>The</strong>y did so, reestablish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitutions, reclaim<strong>in</strong>g property, and beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

negoti<strong>at</strong>ions with the new authorities, the Soviet occup<strong>at</strong>ion and then the German<br />

Democr<strong>at</strong>ic Republic. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Jews</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Leipzig</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued some <strong>of</strong> their old concerns <strong>in</strong> this<br />

new world, negoti<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g with the government and among themselves the n<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>of</strong> their<br />

identities as <strong>Jews</strong> and as Germans.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se negoti<strong>at</strong>ions were brought to a halt by a series <strong>of</strong> anti-Semitic purges <strong>in</strong><br />

1952 and 1953. <strong>The</strong> leadership <strong>of</strong> the Jewish community fled, as did many <strong>of</strong> their<br />

fellow-<strong>Jews</strong>. <strong>The</strong> behavior <strong>of</strong> the East German st<strong>at</strong>e <strong>at</strong> this po<strong>in</strong>t showed some surpris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

commonality with their Nazi predecessors. After the purges were over, those who<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed began another process <strong>of</strong> rebuild<strong>in</strong>g, this time <strong>in</strong> constant tension with a<br />

government th<strong>at</strong> wanted to use them for propaganda purposes dur<strong>in</strong>g the Cold War. With<br />

the fall <strong>of</strong> the communist regime <strong>in</strong> 1989-90, the Jewish community <strong>of</strong> <strong>Leipzig</strong> was able<br />

to chart its dest<strong>in</strong>y aga<strong>in</strong>. <strong>The</strong> old issues <strong>of</strong> identity and community—among themselves<br />

and between <strong>Jews</strong> and their German neighbors—cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> a very different context.<br />
