1. PrefacesNikita (Nik) LopoukhineChair, IUCN World Commission on ProtectedAreasI am honored and pleased to write thispreface to this inspiring book resultingfrom the Delos Initiative. Presenting, asthis book does, an array of sites dedicatedto prayer, meditation and liturgy anddemonstrating how these significant areasof sanctity link to biodiversity conservationis, to say the least, timely. The world isfacing problems of almost insurmountablemagnitude, of which climate change is butone. This book provides examples ofplaces where humans strive to live sustainablyand to reflect on their relationshipwith God and the environment. Theseexamples can act as an important guidefor our own daily living.The work that is being done by the DelosInitiative, within the Task Force on Culturaland Spiritual Values of Protected Areas isproviding a very much needed inspirationand guidance for the World Commissionof Protected Areas. The critical work ofthis Task Force assures a more inclusiveapproach and consideration to spiritualvalues associated with protected areas.For many people, these values are of theutmost importance, even in the technologicallydeveloped countries, whereunfortunately they have been at timesneglected.I grew up mostly in Canada and spent mysummers along the shore of Lake Labellein Quebec. It was and is a place where myfamily, friends and relatives not only renewour physical strength and relationships,but also our spiritual strength. It is a placeinstrumental to my becoming close tonature and molding my career in protectedareas.Over fifty years ago on the shores of thelake, my uncles and my father built achapel dedicated to St. Sergius ofRadonezh, a beloved saint of fourteenthcentury Russia who lived, for some of hislife, in a monastic cell deep within a forest.The late Fr. Alexander Schmemann, thenDean of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminaryin New York spent his summers on the lakeand served the Divine Liturgy on Sundaysand Christian feast days. Other priestscontinue to serve in this chapel each summer.In early August, the feast of Transfigurationis marked by a procession down to< Montserrat, Agulles section, one of the favourite areas of climbers.13

The priest begins theprocession by emerging from behind theIconostasis through the Royal Doors ofthe chapel over which are inscribed thewords of the ancient psalm: ¨Let everythingthat has breath, praise the Lord¨.The choir sings hymns of praise, childrencarry banners and icons, and in my memory,it always seems to be a glorious,sunny summer morning. Returning fromthe lake, we gather around a table ladenwith fruit, wild mushrooms and berries, allearth’s bounties which are then blessedand for which we give thanks. The underliningsignificance, of course, is that theflowering and fruitfulness of all creation istransformed by and filled with the glory ofthe Lord.I relate this annual summer ritual on thelakeshore in Quebec in the context of theDelos Initiative to suggest that, while wecertainly can take inspiration from theselected examples in this marvelousbook, let us also not forget the spiritualconnections we all have to special personalplaces where our spirit is lifted andwhere we can touch the beauty and harmonyof nature. All these places – that wetouch and that touch us - must be protected.They provide us with the meaningof life.14
