All elements in the core area of theWorld Heritage Site are designated aspart of a National Park or as NationalHistoric Sites, Places of Scenic Beauty orNatural Monuments under the Law for theProtection of Cultural Properties.Vanatori Neamt Natural Park, RomaniaVanatori Neamt Natural Park is situated innorth-east Romania in a forested mountainousregion with important natural populationsof species such as Brown Bearand Wolf.The park was set up in 1999 and sincethen has been managed by the NationalForest Administration. It was designatedas a Natural Park on the strength of thesustainable management of its forests,the conservation of its landscape andlocal traditions, the reintroduction ofEuropean Bison into its natural habitatand the encouragement of tourist activitiesbased on these natural values. Thearea has also been proposed as a Natura2000 Site. Vanatori Neamt is famous forits 16 Orthodox monasteries, as well asfor the 40 churches and small hermitagesscattered throughout the area. In additionthe area has acted as inspiration for manyimportant Romanian artists.Doñana National and Natural Parks,Andalusia, SpainLocated at the mouth of the Guadalquivirriver on the Atlantic coast of Andalusia,the Doñana area is the most importantwetland in Spain and is protected by itsdesignation as a National Park, a NaturalPark, a Ramsar Site and a Wetland ofInternational Importance. The variety ofdifferent habitats ensures that the mainenvironmental value of the area is its biodiversity.Just on the edge of the National39
Park stands the shrine of the Virgin delRocío (‘Our Lady of the Dew’), knownlocally as ‘The Queen of Marshes’, objectof some of the most important pilgrimagesin the whole of Spain.
