SolerAbbot of Montserratthat forms an indispensable part of thehuman condition.I am delighted to have the opportunity topen a few words with Nikita Lopoukhine,President of the World Commission onProtected Areas, to mark the publicationof the proceedings of the First Workshopof The Delos Initiative that, under the titleof 'Nature and Spirituality', took place inthe Monastery of Montserrat on 23-26November 2006.The objective of this meeting was to discussthe study of legally protected sitesof great natural value that are also recognisedas sites of spiritual importance intechnologically developed countries.Montserrat is one such sacred site andpossesses an outstanding combinationof both natural and spiritual values. Itboasts a remarkable variety of flora andfauna, as well as fascinating geologicalformations of singular beauty that havefor long attracted the attention of scientistsand nature lovers alike. Nevertheless,when humans enter into contactwith the natural world, they not onlydevelop a thirst for scientific knowledge,but also unleash a capacity for symbolicreflection. They learn to admire and alsoto complement their naturalists' vision ofthe world from the spiritual standpointThe sum - or, even, multiplication - of thedifferent interpretations of this naturalenvironment, 'inhabited' by humans forover a thousand years, has assumed aspecial dimension in Montserrat. The conjunctionof an exceptional natural monument(the mountain) and the BenedictineMonastery and Sanctuary dedicated toSaint Mary, the Mother of Jesus, hasbrought about a reality that is rich inmeaning and significance, but highly complexas a result to manage. Hence, Ibelieve that it is appropriate to mentionhere the work put in by the Board of theMountain of Montserrat in its collaborationwith local and other administrative bodies.As I wrote in the opening greeting for ourwebpage, for us, the monks, Montserratis the Benedictine monastery, with itsalmost thousand years of history. Next toit, a sanctuary dedicated to the Mother ofGod has grown up and this spiritual presence,along with our devotion to theGospel according to the Rule of StBenedict, has marked in a unique and significantfashion the life of the mountain.From this basic nucleus stem all the activitiesthat in a more or less direct fashiondepend on us, and which include, firstly,the Monastery and the Sanctuary, themonastic life and the faith of the pilgrims15
that come to our door, our work, prayersand spiritual study, the welcome we giveto all, our live, in community, the hopesand wishes of those who visit, our joysand our sacred days. Secondly, we promotemany varied cultural activities, allimpregnated with Christian faith: ourmusic and the boy's choir that performsduring liturgical celebrations, painting andsculpture, the publication of books, thestudy of philosophy, theology and humanities,and handicrafts. Finally, from withinour community springs the interest in thestudy and conservation of the naturalenvironment of Montserrat, which, as the'work of God', biblical faith views as anexpression of the beauty of creation thatgladdens our spirits and brings us closerto the mystery of God.I sincerely hope that the Delos Initiativecan continue to deepen and consolidatethe work begun here in Montserrat andthus contribute to the understanding ofhow spiritual values can positively aidconservation and the proper use of naturalareas in technologically developedcountries.
