I do so asPrior and on behalf of Father Josep MariaSoler, the abbot of this all-but millenarycommunity who cannot be with us todaysince at this moment he is attending aseries of meetings in the USA.First of all, I wish to thank the organisersfor having thought of us when it came tochoosing a place for this meeting.Montserrat has a long traditional as ameeting place for a wide variety of differenttypes of groups. Our religious vocationis clear, as our dress reveals. However, weonly ask one thing of those who come tous – that they work for peace. Indeed,people like yourselves, who know andlove the natural world, could you have anyother aim in mind?Montserrat has always welcomed dialogueand new ideas. A few examples suffice:by 1499 there was already a printingpress here and by the end of the eighteenthcentury new and important workon history and the natural world wasalready being carried out. Likewise, todayour museum is home to notable works ofmodern art. The Delos Initiative is alsonovel, even for those of us who have beenworking with and writing about the naturalworld for many years.Nevertheless, Montserrat and its mountain,with its pale vertical cliffs is –if it isanything- home to a Holy Image, a symbolof the transcendental, that unites all thosethat come here (and perhaps even thosewho merely contemplate the curiousforms of the mountain from afar). The verticalnessof the site evokes a further reality:the sanctuary and its rather uninspiringsecular buildings offer a place of peaceand conviviality and will do everything inits power to offer hope to the human race.Likewise, you may well be able to offer usideas as to how we can improve our managementof the natural and spiritual valuesof our mountain, which is the legacy thatwe will have to pass on to future generations.The Rule of Benedict of Nursia, a sixthcenturymonk and founder of theBenedictine Order, refers to the treatmentof one’s guests: they should always bereceived in the monastery as Christ him-21
self. And so, in light of this statement ofprinciples, Montserrat welcomes you andhopes the workshop is fruitful for all concerned.Jordi López,President of the Steering Committee of theBoard of the Mountain of MontserratIt is my pleasure to be able to welcomeyou to Montserrat on behalf of the Boardof the Mountain of Montserrat and tothank you for coming to this natural park.We were surprised when the idea ofholding this meeting here was first suggested,but as time has passed yourpresence here has become an elementof great satisfaction for us for both institutionaland personal reasons. My ownlinks to Montserrat began the day I wasbrought here to be baptised at the tenderage of just one month. Since then I haveremained in close contact with themountain, as the members of the communityknow. I think that the idea ofestablishing a connection between a naturalarea and our own personal interiorexperiences is extremely positive; thediscovery of these personal spiritual elementsis of great importance in modernsociety. I’d like to remind you that thewords spoken by Pope Benedict XVI thisweek, in which he described the monasteriesas the lungs of the soul in an urbanworld, can be applied just as well to thenatural world.Having begun with a personal confession, Ishould like to continue briefly in this vein. Itoo am a biologist and would like to sharewith you a significant personal experiencefrom my time here: the mystical dimensionof the contemplation of the natural world. Iremember the nights in Santa Cecília,another monastery near here and a littlefurther down the mountain, when I wouldcontemplate the heavens and would feelaware of their infiniteness and the relativeinsignificance of humankind. I would notethe same sense of infiniteness during myresearch on cellular structures when Idelved deep into a different world via theeyepiece of an electron microscope. Heretoo I would discover other immensely smallenormities and realise that in those cellstoo there was a harmony that reflected theinfiniteness of life. The Universe and livingcells merged for me in a highly personalexperience here in Montserrat and so I toocan claim to be a spiritual son of this mountain.I firmly believe that the reality providedby Montserrat gives modern society a spiritualdimension amidst the organised chaosthat we are forced to live with.In Catalonia the majority of natural areasalso contain religious elements such asmonasteries or hermitages. They remindus that many of our forefathers lived a22
