1.0 INTRODUCTION<strong>The</strong> <strong>Institution</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineers</strong>, <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong> (IESL) oversees the Engineering Pr<strong>of</strong>ession in <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong>, and inaccordance with its Charter and provisions <strong>of</strong> the Act No. 17 <strong>of</strong> 1968 is empowered to admit to membership,classify and confer titles indicating the pr<strong>of</strong>essional standing <strong>of</strong> its members. In fulfilment <strong>of</strong> its Charterobligations IESL has been responsible for the accreditation <strong>of</strong> engineering education programmes in <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong>and in providing consultative feedback on the development <strong>of</strong> engineering education programmes comparableto global practice.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Institution</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineers</strong>, <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong> evaluates undergraduate engineering degree programmes and accordsaccreditation in accordance with established criteria and procedures, through its Accreditation Board.This Manual outlines the criteria and procedures for accrediting an engineering education programme by the<strong>Institution</strong>.2.0 DEFINITIONS2.1 GENERALIESL / <strong>Institution</strong> - <strong>The</strong> <strong>Institution</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineers</strong>, <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong>IESLAB / Board - <strong>The</strong> <strong>Institution</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineers</strong>, <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong> Accreditation BoardPanel - A team <strong>of</strong> evaluators appointed to undertake accreditationactivities2.2 UNIVERSITY PROGRAMMEUniversity - An institution <strong>of</strong> higher learning, authorised by legislation (eitherdirectly or indirectly) to award pr<strong>of</strong>essional engineering degrees.Faculty - <strong>The</strong> entity responsible for administration and conduct <strong>of</strong> differentengineering education programmes at the University.Department - <strong>The</strong> entity responsible for the design and conduct <strong>of</strong> theprogramme to be accredited.Programme - <strong>The</strong> sequence <strong>of</strong> structured educational experienceundertaken by the students leading, on completion and onsatisfactory assessment <strong>of</strong> performance, to the award <strong>of</strong> anengineering degree.Degree - A graduate level engineering qualification in <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong> normallytitled “Bachelor <strong>of</strong> the Science <strong>of</strong> Engineering”.Academic staff - <strong>The</strong> staff responsible for teaching in the programme leading tothe award <strong>of</strong> the degree.Visiting staff - Staff from other universities and / or practising engineers givinginstructions on a part-time basis.Assessment - Judgement <strong>of</strong> a student’s work by the University or Faculty.Evaluation - Judgement <strong>of</strong> the engineering programme by the <strong>Institution</strong> orits appointed agency.Stakeholders - All groups with key interest in engineering education and itsoutcome.External Examiner - A suitable person with high academic standing outside theuniversity, who scrutinises and reports on examination andassessmentOBE - Outcomes based educationICC - Industry Consultative Committee: a body consisting <strong>of</strong>pr<strong>of</strong>essionals from industries, government, pr<strong>of</strong>essionalorganisation, regulatory, alumni etc., appointed by the universityto ensure the programme’s relevancy to the stakeholders’ needs.2.3 ACCREDITATIONAccredited Degree - A degree eligible for graduate registration and for pr<strong>of</strong>essionalregistration with the <strong>Institution</strong> after satisfying its trainingrequirements.Recognised Degree - A degree eligible for graduate registration and for pr<strong>of</strong>essionalregistration after satisfying conditions stipulated by the<strong>Institution</strong>.2
