Music MattersElective Music ConcertLast Wednesday evening, Senior School musicians presented an action-packed concert for afull house in the Performance Theatre. They organised everything from group performances, smaller singing groups, woodwind ensembles, violin duets, rock bands and drum solos. Ofparticular note was Olivia Fischer’s rendition of “Popular” from the Musical, Wicked whichincluded some very interesting choreography! The Year 8 boys who formed their own band andperformed their own composition are to be commended on their initiative and standard ofperformance. The Year 10 and 11 Elective Music classes paid tribute to their teacher, Ms Hawryluk, who will be leaving us at the end of 2011. It was a great concert with fun had by all. Thank you to theFriends of Music, in particular Mrs Jane Silvester, who, yet again, provided supper for the interval.Instrumental Music ScholarshipsThe applicants for the 2012 Instrumental Scholarships were of very high calibre. Every student is to becongratulated on completing an excellent audition. Unfortunately, not everyone can be awarded ascholarship. However, those who have been successful will receive a letter in the next week confirmingwhether they received a half or a full scholarship for their chosen instrument.125 Years Concert DVD and compilation CDsCopies of the DVD are now available at the cost of $20.00. I can tell youdefinitively that there is nothing to worry about! As Head of Performing Arts, I am fully supportive of allCo-curricular activity at KWS, not just Music. I do not want to put students in a position whereby theyhave to choose between 2 activities that they are equally passionate about. While some Music and Cadet activities run at the same time, most of the Music Programme does not runagainst Cadet time. Mrs Vernon is Head of Cadets and we negotiate the Cadet Day for a student in aparticular Music group so it is possible to be in both. The only real clash for a Musician and a Cadet is eachof the Camps Weeks in Terms 1 and 4. However, if a music student desperately wants to go on CadetCamp instead of Music Camp, then that’s fine. Mrs Vernon and I work together to make sure the bestinterest of each individual student is looked after. In the past, Mrs Vernon has offered to bring someCadets back early so they can be part of the last day or 2 of Music Camp. Then the students get the bestof both worlds.Of course, as student progress through the Senior School reaching Year 9 or 10 level, they may find itchallenging to balance Cadets, Music, Sport and their schoolwork. It is usually by then that students areclear as to where their passion lies and can choose the appropriate pathway. However, it is best to tryeverything on offer in the first few years of the Senior School to ensure all options are open. Please contact me on 6392 0364 if you have any questions about your child’s particular circumstances.Anneliese Alloway - Head of Performing Arts
