5Overview ContinuedWhen the impending nursing shortage was recognized, schools <strong>of</strong> nursing across the stateincreased enrollment in their nursing programs thus reflecting the slight increase in the number <strong>of</strong>register <strong>nurses</strong>. There are approximately 3,284 students enrolled in West Virginia schools <strong>of</strong> nursingto obtain an initial degree in nursing.The West Virginia Board <strong>of</strong> Examiners <strong>for</strong> Registered Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Nurses continues to fulfill itsmission <strong>of</strong> protecting the citizens <strong>of</strong> West Virginia through the regulation <strong>of</strong> the education and practice <strong>of</strong>25,686 <strong>registered</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>nurses</strong>, as well as the 144 Certified Dialysis Technicians.
