FlashGard Motor Control Center (MCC)Product FocusWhat is an Arc Flash? An arc flash is a dangerouscondition associated with theexplosive release of energycaused by an electrical arc dueto either a phase-to-ground orphase-to-phase fault. This faultcan result from many factors, including dropped tools, accidentalcontact with electricalsystems, buildup of conductivedust, corrosion and improperwork procedures.FlashGard MCCFeatures and FunctionsFlashGard Motor ControlCenters utilize many featuresnot yet available in theelectrical industry that haveproven to be a reliable andeffective means of providingenhanced electrical safety tominimize the dangers ofarc flash. FlashGard MCCs areavailable with Freedom NEMAand A200 contactors.Prevention: Insulationand Isolation• Insulated horizontal bus.• Insulated labyrinthvertical bus.• Shutters to isolate thevertical bus when a unitis removed.• Shutters on the unit toisolate the stabs whenbucket is removed.Reduction of Time-AvailableFault Current Using ARMS• Arcflash ReductionMaintenance System.• Applied to breaker feedingMCC to reduce trip timeduring an arc flash.• Can reduce risk categoryfrom CAT3 to CAT0.Maintaining UnitDoor Closed• Units disconnectfrom vertical buswith door closed.• Interlock preventingremoval of unit fromvertical bus.• Interlock preventinginsertion of unit withstabs extended.• A more uniform andsecure connection tothe vertical bus.• RotoTract StabAssembly1:• Connected• Disconnected• Visual indication that stabsare disconnected fromvertical bus.• Optional through-the-doorvoltage present indicator(VoltageVision).• Optional automatic motorinsulation tester(Motorguard).Removing VoltagesDangerous to Life• In “Disconnected” position,no voltage present.• Internal unit shutter toisolate from vertical buswhile in “Disconnected”position.• Stab isolation shutterswhen unit is removed.Enhanced Featuresand Functions• Arc-free insulated bus andbarriered bus system.• Through-the-door voltagepresent indicator(VoltageVision).• Arc-free bucket design.• Remote connect/disconnect rackingmotor accessory.• Automatic insulation tester(Motorguard) to monitorinsulation integrity.1 The FlashGard MCC provides a state-of-the-art remote racking mechanism that providesbus isolation, stab indications and lockout features. The RotoTract stab assembly has twodistinct positions as indicated above. The retractable stab assembly features a 3/8" drivesocket that can accept any standard driver or a 24" remote racking tool. The stabs can beremotely operated with an optional drive motor, allowing the operator to be outside thearc-flash boundary. The Drive Socket is interlocked to prevent opening the door whileinserting the stab assembly. A Manual Shutter prevents operating the breaker when thestabs are not engaged. In addition, an interlock prevents accessing the 3/8" drive socketwhen the breaker is in the ON position. The retractable stab assembly has a unit assemblylatch to ensure the unit remains in place while in the "Connected" mode.

FlashGard MCCBenefits• The minimization ofimpact and exposure tohigher PPE levels inindustrial environments:Bucket Position:Connected/DisconnectedRotoTract Insertion Point3/8” Square• Increases uptime ofproduct line operations• Decreases direct costof employee incidencesInternal Shutter Position:Open/Closed• Increasespersonnel safety• Reduces numberof injury-relatedincidences that occurdaily in North America• Lowers the probabilityof the creation of a shortcircuit phase-to-phaseor phase-to-ground.Breaker OperatorDevice Panel• Lowers the probabilityof electrical shock.• Proven to reduce incidentarc flash energy duringmaintenance.22 As described by the IEEE testingmethod described in IEEE 1584.Remote Racking AccessoryVoltageVision— VoltagePresence IndicatorMegOhm MeterMotorguard — AutomaticInsulation TesterEaton CorporationElectrical Group1000 Cherrington ParkwayMoon Township, PA 15108United States877-ETN-CARE (877-386-2273)Eaton.comPowerChain Management, FlashGard,Motorguard, Arcflash Reduction MaintenanceSystem and RotoTract are trademarks ofEaton Corporation.
