Figure 3.8: HCAL jet energy resolution for the three subsystems (HB in red, HE inblue, HF in magenta) [16].results is illustrate in Fig. 3.8. The missing transverse energy resolution has beendetermined as σ(ET miss ) ≈ 1.0 √ ΣE T in QCD dijet simulations where the averagemissing transverse energy is ET miss ≈ 1.25 √ ΣE T .3.2.6 Forward DetectorsIn the very forward region, CMS will be augmented by the CASTOR and ZDC subdetectorsand work in conjunction with the TOTEM experiment [4].CASTORCASTOR (Centauro and Strange Object Research) is a sampling calorimeter, similarin design to the HF, but covering even higher rapidity ranges (5.5 < |η| < 6.2). It isinstalled surrounding the beam pipe, between the CMS endcaps and the HF in |z| . Itcontains quartz plates to generate Cherenkov light from passing particles and tungstenplates as absorbers. The electromagnetic component of the shower is absorbed in aseparate front section with thinner layering, while the hadronic component, mainlyfrom neutral pions, is absorbed over the rest of the detector. In heavy ion collisions,CASTOR is expected to record total and electromagnetic energy deposits of about150 TeV with a resolution on the order of 1%.ZDCThe Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC) is another sampling calorimeter, located at adistance of 140 m from the interaction point, between the two LHC beam lines. Since itis preceded by the LHC beam separator, only neutral particles will reach the detector,27
